Triumph Motorcycles fined Rs 19.2 crore in USA

British bikemaker Triumph Motorcycles have been fined $2.9 million (Rs 19.2 crore) by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for delaying the recall of the Triumph Street Triple R in the US market

Triumph Street Triple R

Triumph Motorcycles has been fined by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The British bikemaker had recalled the Triumph Street Triple R from the US market when it was noticed that the four bolts holding cable guides to either side of the headstock could get loosened without any prior notice and could result in an accident. The affected units of the Triumph Street Triple R were recalled in September last year in US market but it was noticed that Triumph Motorcycles had recalled the Street Triple R as early as June 2013 in the UK market.

This meant that Triumph Motorcycles had delayed to address the affected bikes by almost 13 months in the US market. For this purpose, Triumph Motorcycles has been levied a $2.9 million (Rs 19.2 crore) fine for violations of Safety Act by the NHTSA. That sum includes a $1.4 million cash penalty that Triumph must pay to the NHTSA, as well as $500,000 expenditure in order to meet a series of requirements to improve its safety practices. Triumph could have to pay an added $1 million in penalties should the company violate the consent order or if additional Safety Act violations emerge.
