The new engine, codenamed HRA0, will debut in the Nissan Magnite

  • It develops 100PS of power and 160Nm of torque (152Nm in CVT).
  • It’s offered with a 5-speed manual and CVT options.
  • Kiger expected to launch in Q1 2021, with the Triber Turbo to follow soon after.
  • Renault Kiger likely to have an aggressive starting price of Rs 6 lakh.

Renault India will soon enter the sub-4 metre SUV segment with the HBC. Likely to be called the Kiger, it will have a lot in common with the upcoming Magnite including its 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine. This new unit, whose specifications have just been revealed, will be found under the hood of the Triber as well.

Nissan’s new 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, codenamed the HRA0, develops 100PS of power and 160Nm of torque. Just like the Magnite, Renault will offer this engine with a 5-speed manual and CVT in the Triber and Kiger. It will be sold alongside the entry-level 72PS 1.0-litre petrol engine in both cars.

The addition of the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine could benefit the Triber as the 72PS/96Nm naturally aspirated petrol engine lacks grunt, especially on an open road with a full load. One needs to keep the engine on boil to extract the most out of it. The CVT in the turbo engine is smoother than the slow shifting AMT. We expect it to reach showrooms by mid-2021. It is expected to command a premium of around Rs 1 lakh over the naturally aspirated variants, priced from Rs 5.12 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Kiger, on the other hand, is expected to be revealed in early-2021. The exterior design will be inspired by the Kwid while its interior is likely to borrow elements from the Magnite. Just like the Magnite, Renault’s upcoming SUV is likely to have an aggressive starting price of around Rs 6 lakh (ex-showroom).

Apart from its sibling, the Magnite, the Renault Kiger will fight it out with the Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Toyota Urban Cruiser, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport and Mahindra XUV300.
