Renault KWID Expert Review

This review is of the Kwid Climber and the Kwid AMT from 2018. Some features and impressions may have changed since this time.

The Kwid’s seen a number of changes over the years with a larger 1.0-litre engine and then an AMT being added into the mix along the way. It also featured segment firsts like a touchscreen infotainment system, digital infotainment cluster and SUV looks. This time around, though, the updates are rather small. So, let’s list out the number of changes Renault have made to the 2018 Kwid lineup.

2018 Renault Kwid Climber AMT

Not much has changed in the looks department with Renault adding a new chrome garnish to the top portion of the grill on the top-end Kwid and a new sticker for the side cladding on the 1.0-litre variants. The Climber that you see in the pictures has actually received no external changes at all.

2018 Renault Kwid Climber AMT

The changes to the 2018 Kwid are focussed mostly on the rear passengers. There is a new dropdown armrest for the rear bench, while the RXT(O) and the Climber get a new 12V charge socket on the rear parcel tray. The other change to the rear is the addition of ELR (Emergency retractable seatbelts) or what we know as regular seatbelts for rear passengers, across the range. These replace the manually adjustable fixed seatbelts from before.

2018 Renault Kwid Climber AMT

At the front, the only change is to the touchscreen infotainment in the Climber and the RXT(O), that will now display feed from the new reversing camera that has also been added to the features list of the 2018 Kwid.

2018 Renault Kwid Climber AMT

While the space hasn’t changed, it’s manageable and a lot more comfortable for two passengers, with the addition of the rear armrest. With the addition of the rear charge socket, your kids will also love the fact that they don't have to fight you for the front charge socket to charge iPads and gaming phones. And that sums up the changes to the interior experience with the new Kwid Climber.

2018 Renault Kwid Climber AMT

With the new changes to the rear, the Climber has gotten a lot safer than before. Its front seatbelts feature more advanced Pro-Sense pretensioner, load limiting seatbelts and regular ELR seatbelts at the rear. It offers a driver airbag in both, the Climber and the RXT(O) but this is fairly on par for the segment, till the government decides to pass new regulations that will mandate ABS and dual airbags as standard equipment on all new cars.

Driving Impressions

The addition of the creep function to the easyR transmission really compliments the drive experience. Pulling away from a standstill is a much less jerky affair and the Kwid does not lurch forward as before, when you get on the throttle. So tackling bumper-to-bumper traffic is much less stressful and novice drivers will be thankful for the update.

2018 Renault Kwid Climber AMT

But that’s not the only area that has been affected with the new creep function. Gearshifts, and even getting on and off the throttle while the car is moving has become a lot smoother as well. This is because the creep function automatically adds just a hint of throttle and hence, there is much less drivetrain lash (a phenomenon that occurs when the drivetrain is loaded and unloaded) and in turn, the driving experience is all the more calmer.

2018 Renault Kwid Climber AMT

The creep function, however, is not to be confused with a hill-hold function. And while the car does creep forward in traffic as advertised, it won’t do the same on an incline. You will still need to use the handbrake to prevent the car from rolling backwards as you climb away from a standstill on a slope.

2018 Renault Kwid Climber AMT

Other than this change, the Kwid is still the easy going car it was in the city. The light steering combines well with the AMT to provide a very pleasant city driving experience. It’s still not the best highway car though as the lack of a manual override makes overtaking risky. The skinny tyres, lack of ABS and light controls don't help its high-speed stability either. You can also refer to our indepth road test review of the 2017 Renault Kwid and Climber

Test figures:

0-100 17.30s
Quarter Mile 21.15s/114.29kmph
Roll-ons Kickdown (20-80kmph) 9.45s
100-0 kmph 59.67m
80-0 kmph 35.30m
City 17.09kmpl
Highway 21.43kmpl
2018 Renault Kwid Climber AMT

While these changes are more like a ripple than a big wave, Renault has addressed some of the glaring omissions to the Kwid, like the manually adjustable rear seat belts and the missing creep function on the AMT. It also, again, brings buyers in this segment, firsts like the reverse parking camera and the rear armrest. When you take into consideration that Renault hasn't increased the price [Prices range between Rs 2.67 - Rs 4.59 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi)], the Kwid has just become an even more youthful and attractive prospect.

  • Efficient and Stylish Companion

Renault Kwid is really affordable. It is with its jet engines which provides good mileage. From an efficiency point-of-view it fast for urban mobility. Through its streamlined look and colorful range in particular, it dominates the roads effortlessly. The comfortable seating makes the long journeys to an enjoyment. It has a 1.0 liter engine, hence is in good balance between performance and fuel conservation. Space is a variety, and it assures of passengers comfort. Safety features as ABS, EBD, and driver airbag looking after the riders all over the way on the road.

  • Smooth and absorbent ride

It offer good features and the safety features are very great in this hatchback. The gearshift is very smooth and the clutch is light also the ride quality is very nice and absorbent but the material quality is not good. Renault Kwid is easy to drive and the cabin feel nice but at the back space is tight for the 3 passangers so only 2 people can sit comfortably at the back. I have a base model of this hatchback and the price is very affordable for this.

  • Stylish Design, Efficient Performance

A popular option for city commuters, the Renault Kwid is a fragile hatchback with a character for practicality, provident best experience, and excellent looks. My cherished Kwid has a special appearance with looks cues evocative of SUVs and a wide cabin that provides comfort and luxury for standard road passages. The Kwid offers a snappy and enjoyable ride with excellent energy capability thanks to its energy-effective machine and move easily running. Renault has played to produce my dream auto, which isn't only aesthetically pleasing but also nicely priced and veritably active. My favorite car is the Kwid because of its excellent balance of affordability, functionality, and fineness.

    Driving experience

Driving experience is good.Car's pickup, Mileage are above average.Doesn't demand servicing often.Altho service centres are available at most cities but its body workshop is not available everywhere.I have to get it to 90kms away to other city bilaspur.Company claims good ground clearance but after 4-5 persons sit, It shows poor ground clearance.Bootspace is awesome. Can carry much luggage. It won't regret you.I have been driving this car since last 5 years.

  • Compact Joyrides

The Renault Kwid has redefined the entry-level hatchback segment with its stylish design, useful features and affordable price point. Featuring a small but tight exterior that’s easy to spot on the road thanks to an SUV-inspired airplane design that’s dynamic and fun-filled the Kwid also has a spacious interior for passengers and luggage; This makes it the ideal option for city drives and weekends away from home. On top of this, the Kwid’s engine options are economical so offer decent mileage without sacrificing power. But some residents feel that the interior features are basic while others feel that some are a bit bumpy when driving over rough terrain Despite the choice of equipment on offer a more impressive number to the best three for only a quid. These few reservations aside, the Renault Kwid is one of those economy cars that combines affordable pricing with style and functionality to make it appealing to a wide choice of versatility to drive cars loves

  • End models

The renault kwid automatic 2017 model offers a smooth driving experience, Especially in city traffic with its compact size and automatic transmission. The mileage is decent, Providing good fuel efficiency for urban commutes. It is around 16 kmpl in cities and 20 kmpl on highways. The pickup might feel a bit sluggish compared to some other cars in its class, But it's adequate for daily driving needs.Service costs are generally affordable, As renault tends to offer competitive pricing for maintenance.Engine performance is satisfactory for city driving, But it might struggle a bit on highways, Especially when fully loaded.Build quality is decent, With a sturdy feel to the car, Though some may find the interior materials a bit basic compared to higher-end models.Overall, It's a reliable and budget-friendly option for urban driving.

  • Design is not so impressive

Renault Kwid is a compact hatchback that offers an economical and practical driving experience. With its stylish design and compact dimensions, it's well-suited for navigating urban streets. The Kwid provides good fuel efficiency, making it economical to run, and its small size makes parking a breeze. However, its modest engine performance may feel lacking on highways, and the interior can feel a bit basic compared to some rivals. Despite these drawbacks, the Kwid's affordability, fuel efficiency, and compact size make it an appealing choice for budget-conscious drivers in urban areas
