Tata Tiago Hits A Milestone, Records 5 Lakh Sales!

Tata says the last one lakh units were dispatched in a span of just 15 months

  • Tata Tiago hits 5 lakh sales milestone.
  • It was originally named as the Zica before being changed to Tiago.
  • The hatch got multiple updates including a facelift and NRG, latter with rugged design elements.
  • There was a hot hatch version called the JTP that lived for a short span of time.
  • Current powertrain options include petrol, CNG and EV.
  • Tiago EV has also been a runaway success for Tata Motors.

Tata Motors has announced that the Tiago hatchback has hit the 5-lakh-sales milestone in India. The entry-level hatch from the Indian marque was launched in 2016 and has been a hit ever since. During its journey, the Tiago got multiple new variants, powertrain options including the extremely popular Tiago EV hatchback.

The Tiago is the successor to the Indica, which was on sale for decades in India; and in fact, a household name. It was originally christened the Zica. However, due to the virus outbreak back then, the carmaker swifty renamed it to Tiago as we know it today. It was also the first time the Indica was getting a true successor in the form of the Tiago.

The Tiago was and is appreciated for its clean design, a nice cabin experience with quality materials and its features list, which gets all the essentials one would need. Also, to satisfy the cravings of enthusiasts, Tata introduced the Tiago JTP, which was mighty fun to drive; however, the plug was pulled too soon. In 2020 while updating the hatchback for BS6 norms, Tata also took the opportunity to introduce the facelifted model

During its lifespan, the Tiago spanned a cross version of the hatchback, the Tiago NRG, with rugged design elements. It was initially offered with 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.05-litre diesel engine, though the latter was scrapped during the transition to BS6 emission standards. Later down the line, the carmaker introduced a CNG version for those looking for a frugal option.

Adding to its appreciation was the fact that the hatchback achieved a 4-star rating in the Global NCAP crash safety test. A big positive, considering most of the models in the lower segment got three stars and below.

But where Tata hit the ball off the park is while introducing the electric version of the Tiago. Buyers appreciated the fact that they are getting a small hatchback with an electric powertrain offering a decent range for daily urban commutes. The Tiago EV became so successful that the carmaker sold 20,000 units within a year!

The Tata Tiago is currently priced from Rs 5.59 lakh to Rs 12.03 lakh (NRG and EV price range included). While the ICE version goes up against models such as the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R and Celerio, the EV version, on the other hand, locks horns with the Citroen eC3.
