TVS Jupiter: 1,700km Long Term Review

Riding a scooter during the monsoons season has certain virtues... we tell you more

TVS Jupiter scooter in the rain

Monsoon’s here, which means the road condition goes from bad to worse. The number of potholes, ditches and loose gravel multiply making the road seem more like the surface of the moon. To my rescue comes the Jupiter, not the planet but the scooter, my companion of the streets.

The telescopic forks and larger than usual 12-inch wheels come to the good use, but obviously compared to a bike the wheels are small and larger ditches need extra attention. During spell of rain and more so after it, the front panel of the scooter ensured that I (and my precious shoes), remained shielded from the muck the tyres spray about.

The TVS Jupiter has just returned after its first service and most of the rattles and squeaks I was complaining about in my previous report have been sorted. With use the brakes had started to fade, but thankfully the TVS service centre guys fixed that too. The engine still has a light clinking sound, which the service guys say is a characteristic sound.

It’s nothing alarming and I can live with it, as long as it continues to serve the butter smooth power. The 110cc motor delivers adequate performance and manages to pull me out of the monsoon craters. The soft suspension helps tackle bad roads, without bottoming out.

As the rains have become more severe, I’m unable to use the scooter as regularly and I depend more on four wheels. I think the scooter will need a quick service once again by the end of the month to keep everything well lubricated and rust free. But, as long as there are short breaks in the downpour, I’ll prefer to use the TVS Jupiter for my city run abouts, because it’s just so hassle free.

Good:  Telescopic forks, comfort, protection from tyre spray

Bad:  Agility

Kilometres done: 1,700km

Fuel Economy: 50.1kmpl (on an average)
