Maruti Suzuki is considering launching flex fuel cars in the country as an alternative source of fuel to its lineup of petrol and CNG models. The news comes back after Nitin Gadkari, the current Minister of Road Transport & Highways, has said that flex fuels could come to India as soon as next six to eight months.
Flex fuel cars run on a combination of two fuels, which is basically petrol and ethanol. A car’s engine would need modifications to run on this fuel, but the costs of development isn’t likely to be as high as developing a new electric drivetrain. Then there’s the fact that flex fuel is much cleaner and cheaper than regular petrol.

It would be a while before we see flex fuel Maruti cars as it is still in research and development stages. If introduced, this would give customers another option to consider from the regular petrol or CNG options as Maruti has confirmed diesel models won’t make a comeback anytime soon.
While carmakers like Tata have already put their foot down in developing electric cars, Maruti has been straying away from EVs (at least in the near future) due to poor EV infrastructure. If the MoRTH sticks to its promise of bringing flex fuels to India as soon as possible, seeing a new flex fuel powered Maruti could become a reality in the near future.
