The global-spec model of the new Swift concept is expected to get a more efficient engine in the form of a hybrid powertrain

Suzuki has taken the wraps off the new Swift concept at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show. It inspires the next-generation Swift in India, which is expected to break cover in 2024. Let's explore how the new Swift differs from the current model.

Design

In terms of design, the next-gen Swift looks familiar to the current one as the overall silhouette is very similar. The new model gets sharper styling, thanks to the new grille design and new headlights with signature LED DRLs, both of which rest below the bonnet line.

The side profile of the car also features a familiar design as the current model, but now gets conventional door handles, as opposed to the C-pillar handles seen on the current model. It also showcases a new design for the alloy wheels.

At the rear, the new Swift gets a more angular design with inverted C-shaped LED signature DRLs and certain black inserts on the rear bumper. But overall, the design remains familiar and reminiscent to the current car.

Interior

The interior cabin of the upcoming Swift is the biggest change as it resembles the cabin layout of models like the Baleno, Fronx, and Grand Vitara. Overall the design change is welcome as the current-gen model’s interior is now dated.

While the current-gen model has a black theme, the new model sports a sportier gloss black and white theme.

Features

The feature list of the new Swift has not been detailed yet, but it will likely include a 9-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, as visible in the concept images. It retains bits like an analog driver's display with an MID display in the middle, and features such as cruise control, automatic climate control, keyless entry with push-button start-stop will also be carried over.

In addition to the standard safety features, the new Swift will also get a range of ADAS features which include autonomous braking assist, automatic high beam assist, and more.

Powertrain

In terms of the powertrain, the current Swift is offered with a 1.2-litre DualJet petrol engine that produces 89PS/113Nm and is paired with either a 5-speed manual or an AMT transmission. Engine specifications for the new Swift have not been revealed yet, but when launched in India it is expected to get the same engine.

Price and Rivals

The current-gen Swift is retailed in India from Rs 5.99 lakh (ex-showroom) to Rs 9.03 lakh (ex-showroom) and is offered in four broad trims: LXi, VXi, ZXi and ZXi+. The new-gen Swift will command a higher price tag compared to the outgoing one and will continue to rival the Tata Punch, and the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios when launched in India
