Take a closer look at India’s best selling motorcycle, which is now much smarter
The Hero Splendor is over 28 years old; however, over time, it has evolved to become one of the most popular motorcycles in the country. Hero has had stupendous success with each of the previous versions of the Splendor, which has been the best-selling motorcycle for several years. Recently, the Xtec variant was launched with several smart updates. Let's take a closer look at the new Splendor Plus Xtec.
Hero is the only Indian bikemaker to offer 100cc motorcycles at the moment. While the overall styling of the Splendor Plus Xtec remains the same, it features a range of tech upgrades underneath. This variant also gets four new colour schemes, namely Sparkling Beta Blue, Canvas Black, Tornado Grey and Pearl White. The Canvas Black one shown here looks minimalistic and highlights the lines of the bike better.
The new features include a segment-first all-digital display with Bluetooth connectivity that provides incoming and missed call alerts, message alerts, two trip meters, real time mileage indicator and low fuel indicator, apart from run-of-the-mill info like fuel gauge, speedometer and odometer. It also gets an integrated USB charging port.
Keeping safety in mind, the bike gets a side-stand alert and side-stand engine cutoff, and also features a bank-angle sensor that cuts off the engine during a fall.
The bike also gets an LED DRL integrated into the headlamp cowl. This LED DRL is paired with the same headlamp and turn indicators as the other variants. While the offset LED takes some getting used to, it looks quirky and lends this bike some personality.
The Splendor Plus Xtec gets the same 97.2cc single cylinder engine, producing 7.9PS and 8.05Nm, which also powers all the other variants of the Splendor Plus. The engine is blacked out, which works well with the black paint scheme on this bike to give a stealthy look.
The Splendor Plus Xtec also gets the i3S (Idle Stop Start) system to aid fuel efficiency. This system detects if the engine is idling too long while the bike is stationary, and cuts off the engine, thereby saving fuel. A quick yank on the clutch quickly starts the engine right back up.
Underpinnings include a front telescopic suspension coupled to dual rear preload adjustable shocks, found on all variants of the Splendor.
Braking duties are shared by 130mm drum brakes at both ends that feature a combined braking system (CBS). Hero could’ve offered a front disc at least as an option.
The Hero Splendor Plus Xtec is priced at Rs 72,900 (ex-showroom Delhi), which makes it Rs 2,200 more expensive than the self-start i3S variant.
The closest rival is the TVS Radeon, which comes with a similar design language. However, the disc brake-equipped variant costs just Rs 1,166 more than the Splendor Plus Xtec and comes with a more powerful 110cc engine apart from offering better safety with the front disc brake. Other notable rivals include the Bajaj CT110, Honda CD110 Dream, and TVS Sport.
