Specs & Features of Xtreme 125R

Hero Xtreme 125R Latest Updates

The Xtreme 125R is Hero MotoCorp’s latest motorcycle in the premium, sporty 125cc segment. It was designed to offer the best of both worlds - Sporty riding and commuting, without compromising on fuel efficiency. It is also designed to look aggressive and be feature packed to appeal to a younger generation of urban riders who want a little ‘extra’ from their 125cc motorcycles.

How much does the Xtreme 125R cost?

Prices for the Xtreme 125R start at Rs 95,000 for the entry-level variant, going up to Rs 99,500 for the top end one (both prices ex-showroom Delhi).

How many variants does the Xtreme 125R have?

The Xtreme 125R comes in two variants - IBS and ABS, priced at Rs 95,000 and Rs 99,500 respectively. The IBS gets Hero’s Integrated Braking System (Hero’s version of combined brakes), where the front brake gets activated when the rider uses the rear brake. This adds a bit of safety in emergency braking situations by ensuring the braking forces are distributed to both front and rear tyres. The ABS version comes with Single-Channel ABS, which has a proper Anti-lock Braking System for the front wheel. Both variants offer a disc brake at the front as standard, and have alloy wheels with tubeless tyres, which should make puncture repairs much easier.

Which is the best variant of the Xtreme 125R to buy?

We would always recommend the ABS version as ABS will provide much better safety compared to IBS when braking hard on loose or slippery surfaces by ensuring the front wheel doesn’t lock, thereby preventing the bike from skidding. Also, the ABS variant gets a larger 276mm front disc while the IBS version gets a smaller 240mm disc at the front.

What are the colour options available for the Xtreme 125R?

The Xtreme 125R comes in three colour options - Cobalt Blue, Firestorm Red and Stallion Black. Both the Cobalt Blue and Firestorm Red have Blue and Red paint respectively on the bikini fairing, tank extensions, part of the front mud guard, part of the tail section and the grab handles. The rest of the bike has silver and black panels. The Stallion Black on the other hand is black all over.

Our favourite colour for the Xtreme 125R:

We really like both the Cobalt Blue and Firestorm Red colours in the Xtreme 125R as the contrast between the Blue or Red, and silver and black panels really stands out.

How is the Xtreme 125R’s pickup? (Key specs & tested figures)

The Xtreme 125R’s 125cc air-cooled engine produces 11.4PS @ 8250rpm and 10.5Nm @ 6500rpm. These figures are among the highest in the 125cc class. This gives the bike pretty brisk acceleration, and in our tests, it went from zero to 60kmph in just 6.28 seconds. Even when overtaking in the city, it is reasonably quick as it effortlessly accelerates from 30kmph to 70kmph in third gear in just 7.2 seconds. So whether accelerating away from a stop light or passing through traffic, the Xtreme 125R is very easy to manage.

Is the Xtreme 125R a sports bike?

Although the Xtreme 125R looks quite aggressive and sporty, and offers reasonably quick performance, it isn’t an out-and-out sports bike. The footpegs are more rear-set compared to regular 125cc commuter bikes, but the handlebar is tall enough to give you a fairly upright riding posture. So it is actually quite comfortable to ride in the city. Even the split seats have plenty of space for both rider and pillion. So the Xtreme 125R is best described as a sporty, premium commuter rather than a sports bike.

What is the mileage of the Xtreme 125R?

In our mileage test, the Xtreme returned an incredible mileage of 81.53kmpl in the city and 61.68kmpl on the highway. In mixed riding conditions you can expect a mileage of 65-70kmpl from the Xtreme 125, if ridden properly. With a fuel tank capacity of 10 litres, you are looking at a full tank range of at least 600km, so most city riders should be able to commute for a couple of weeks before having to refuel.

Is the Xtreme 125 a good bike for occasional highway use?

The Xtreme’s engine offers more performance than other 125cc commuter motorcycles. So on the highway, it can manage higher speeds quite easily. In our tests, we were able to push the Xtreme well past 100kmph on the highway, but it cruises quite comfortably at 70-80kmph. At these speeds, the engine feels really smooth. So while the Xtreme 125R isn’t designed for long distance touring, if your commutes include some highway sections, the Xtreme will handle them quite easily.

What features does the Xtreme 125R have?

The Xtreme 125R comes with all-LED lighting - headlight, tail light and indicators. It also gets a fully digital negatively-lit LCD instrument cluster that has a speedometer, tachometer, odometer, two trip meters, fuel gauge, as well as a clock, average fuel economy indicator and a gear position indicator. The display is a bit on the smaller side, but all the information is well laid out and easy to read. Apart from this, the Xtreme 125 gets alloy wheels, tubeless tyres and a front disc brake as standard (rear brake is a 130mm drum as standard). The ABS variant also gets a single-channel Anti-lock Braking System for enhanced braking safety as well.

Should you buy the Xtreme 125R?

The Xtreme 125R is a bike that’s great for city riding, and performs reasonably well for occasional highway use. Its nimble handling characteristics and punchy engine make it fun to ride as well. But what makes it really stand out is its aggressive design that makes it look like a much bigger bike. On top of that, it also offers great safety with Single-channel ABS. In fact, it’s the only sporty 125cc commuter bike that gets ABS. For those who want a 125cc bike that feels more special than others in its class, the Hero Xtreme 125R is a great choice.

What are the alternatives to the Xtreme 125R?

The closest competitors to the Xtreme 125R are the TVS Raider and the Honda SP 125. The TVS is on par to the Xtreme when it comes to performance and efficiency, but offers a lot more features such as a TFT console with Bluetooth connectivity (in the Raider’s top variant). The Honda SP 125 offers a funky design as well, but doesn’t match up to the Xtreme in performance or mileage. However, Honda’s bulletproof reliability might be a reason to consider the SP 125 over the Xtreme. However, where the Xtreme really shines over the other two is with regards to safety, thanks to its single-channel ABS, and that too under 1 lakh Rupees ex-showroom.

Xtreme 125R Expert's Conclusion

In a sea of 125cc commuter bikes, the Hero Xtreme 125R stands out by offering a refreshing blend of practicality with exciting performance and fun handling. It’s a feature packed bike too with its connectivity features and is also the only one in its segment to offer ABS as an option.

Hero Xtreme 125R Expert Review

Hero MotoCorp launched the Hero Xtreme 125R at the Hero World Day 2024 event in Jaipur at the manufacturer’s Center of Innovation and Technology (CIT). It's aimed at being a 125cc premium commuter bike and rivals models like the TVS Raider and Bajaj Pulsar NS125. To verify this, we briefly tested it on CIT's handling track.

Design

Now, let's discuss the looks. Even though it's called the Xtreme, it doesn't resemble the Xtreme 160R much. It has a big bikini fairing with a wide headlight featuring two LED projectors, giving it a unique appearance. Some are even comparing its look to the Ducati Streetfighter V4, possibly influenced by Hero's recent collaboration with Zero Motorcycles.

Moving down the bike, you'll notice large tank extensions that appear imposing. However, from certain angles, especially when you're on the bike, they might seem a bit awkward due to their width and low positioning. While they add a sense of weight to the Xtreme 125R, opinions on them are divided.

In the middle of the bike, there's a stylish two-tone centre panel that enhances its sporty vibe. The tail is clean and tidy, featuring a rear tyre hugger. Overall, the design is sporty, but it's definitely unconventional. Hero seems to have lived up to their claim of sportiness, at least when it comes to the design.

Engine, Performance & Mileage

The Hero Xtreme 125R is powered by a completely new engine, although it likely originated from the motor used in the Glamour or Super Splendor. Hero insists they've extensively worked on various parts, making it essentially a new engine. It's a 125cc single-cylinder air-cooled engine that delivers 11.55PS of peak power and 10.5Nm of peak torque. While these numbers may not seem high, they rank near the top in the 125cc category, just slightly behind the Pulsar NS 125.

According to Hero, the Xtreme 125R can accelerate from 0 to 60kmph in just 5.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 95kmph. These claims seem credible based on the bike's performance on Hero's test track, where we observed around 98kmph on the speedometer. These figures are commendable for this class of bike.

The standout feature of this engine is its refinement. It remains smooth and free of vibrations until you push the revs near the redline. However, you won't need to rev it so hard thanks to its tractability. The bike can maintain speeds as low as 20-22kmph in fourth gear without struggling to accelerate. This makes it convenient for city riding with fewer gear changes.

If you're in the mood for spirited riding, the engine felt punchy  while testing it on Hero's handling track andit showed strong acceleration out of tight corners in second gear.

Hero also claims an impressive fuel efficiency of 66kmpl for the Xtreme 125R, placing it among the top performers in mileage for this segment.

Handling & Ride Quality

According to Hero, several features on this bike are the first in its category. One notable feature is the 37mm telescopic fork, making it the thickest among 125cc bikes. It's as large as the fork on the Xtreme 160R. The bike also gets a seven-step preload-adjustable monoshock at the back. What's truly impressive is the new chassis.

Hero has been creating bikes with outstanding chassis in recent years, and the Xtreme 125R follows suit. The combination of this chassis, new suspension, and 17-inch wheels (a first for any sub-150cc Hero bike) gives the bike excellent handling characteristics. Despite its 136kg weight, it feels lighter, and during turns on the CIT handling track, it proved to be quite nimble.

Initially, the front end felt a bit light in the first few laps. However, once you trust the front end and commit to corners, the Xtreme 125R becomes stable and instils confidence through turns. The confidence is also attributed to the MRF Zapper tyres, larger than most 125cc bikes in the market (90/90-17 at the front and 120/80-17 at the rear).

The Xtreme 125R is available in two variants: single-channel ABS with a 276mm front disc and IBS (Integrated Braking System) with a 240mm disc. Both variants include a standard 130mm drum at the rear. We rode the ABS version, and the brakes performed well with a good bite and lever feel. Importantly, the Xtreme 125R is the only bike in its class with ABS, surpassing even the most powerful and our favorite, the TVS Raider, in this aspect.

Comfort

The Xtreme 125R has a pretty low 794mm seat height, making it easy for even shorter riders to place their feet on the ground comfortably. The seat itself is wide, allowing easy movement, even for those taller than 6 feet. The slightly rear-set footpegs and the tall handlebar results in an upright sitting position—a nice balance between a sporty and commuter stance. This setup is ideal for city rides, occasional highway journeys, and could even bring some fun on a weekend adventure along twisty mountain roads.

Features

The Xtreme 125 has a compact yet tidy display. It's a fully digital, negative LCD console providing essential information like speed, rpm, odometer, two tripmeters, and average fuel consumption. While it's a very simple setup, it does the job effectively.

Should You Buy The Hero Xtreme 125R?

We were a bit doubtful at first when Hero claimed they achieved the perfect mix of commuting and sportiness with the Xtreme 125R. However, after spending some time with it, it's evident they seem to have nailed this balance in almost every aspect of the bike.

The Xtreme 125R starts at Rs 95,000 for the IBS model, and if you prefer ABS, it'll cost you Rs 99,500 (both prices ex-showroom Delhi). The pricing is quite attractive, undercutting competitors like the Pulsar NS125 and even the top-end TVS Raider.

So, if you're in the market for a 125cc commuter bike that can bring some excitement on occasion, the Hero Xtreme 125R should definitely be on your radar.
