Back in August, the gap between them was less than 100 units!

Naam mey Hero, sales mey hero. There’s no disputing the fact that Hero MotoCorp’s biggest flex till date is its impressive streak of selling lakhs of two-wheelers, month-on-month, year-on-year. Unsurprisingly, December 2022 has been no different for the world’s largest bike maker, it has outshined former partner and closest rival - Honda by selling nearly twice as many two-wheelers.

December ‘22 Domestic and International Sales:

Hero

Honda

394,179 units

250,171 units

Hero’s arsenal has several products that are affordable, with models like the Splendor, Glamour and Passion, which along with scooters like Pleasure and Maestro that mobilise the masses. They are also available in a plethora of variants at varied price points allowing Hero to tap into a large chunk of the commuter market. In comparison, Honda has a single ace up its sleeve- Activa 6G/Activa 125. This scooter alone helps Honda take the fight to Hero from time to time. Sure, the Honda Shine is the best-selling 125cc bike in India but its sales is just a fraction of the Activa’s numbers.

It’s interesting to note that Honda fell behind Hero by just 85 units in August. We reckon the festive season had certainly been kind to Hero. Over the past year, Hero has also been updating all its commuter motorcycles and scooters with modern features like Bluetooth connectivity and USB charging.

This is possibly helping the marquee keeping things fresh in the sales register. Alternatively, Honda has been playing conservatively. That said, if in 2023 Honda rolls out the Activa 7G, we could see a shift in the tide.
