To find that out, we take both the manual and automatic versions of the Jimny to our test location to bring you the answers
In our latest edition of ZigWheels’ performance report, we line up two Maruti Suzuki Jimnys. Both look very similar on the outside, but one is an automatic while the other is the manual. We are in our test location and going to find out which one is quicker in our 0-100kmph and in-gear acceleration tests. Let the games begin:
Spec Check
The Maruti Suzuki Jimny is powered by a 105PS 1.5-litre petrol engine, which can be had with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed torque converter automatic. Regardless of the transmission you choose, four-wheel drive with a low-range transfer case is offered as standard for improved off-roading prowess.

But today is about on-road performance and here are the times both the cars posted:
Acceleration Test
Tests |
Jimny Manual |
Jimny Automatic |
0-100 kmph |
13.64 seconds |
15.73 seconds |
In Gear Acceleration |
30-80 kmph (3rd gear) - 10.27 seconds 40-100 kmph (4th gear) - 19.90 seconds |
- |
Kickdown |
- |
20-80 kmph - 9.29 seconds |
As seen in the above table, the Jimny MT is clearly quicker than the automatic, beating it in the acceleration test by a bit over two seconds. And while testing parameters are different for in-gear acceleration runs due to their transmission difference, the Jimny automatic was quicker from 20-80kmph as opposed to the third gear 30-80kmph acceleration run in the manual. In the real world, the Jimny manual would require a downshift to keep up with the auto, which just required a prod on the go pedal.
Price And Rivals
In the confines of this test, the Jimny manual was quicker in the outright acceleration run, while the automatic was quicker during kickdown. So it makes sense to call this test a tie.
The Jimny, priced from Rs 12.74 lakh (ex-showroom), locks horns with the Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha. If you had your eyes set on a new Jimny, now may be the time to consider buying one as it’s being offered at a special price.
