A rebadged TVS Apache RR 310 may not sound like a good deal for many of us Indian enthusiasts, but BMW Motorrad has its reasons. We decode them
BMW Motorrad has just entered the 300-400cc supersport segment with the launch of the BMW G 310 RR. A lot of enthusiasts may feel that rebadged TVS Apache RR 310 wouldn’t quite cut it. But as it turn out, the German bikemaker has its own reasons:
BMW Motorrad is heavily banking on the premium factor that comes with its products. The company feels the badge value and the buying experience from a BMW showroom is a lot more premium compared to TVS where you are greeted with mass market products alongside the flagship bike that is the ‘Apache RR 310.’
Also, owners of the BMW G 310 RR can learn the nuances of riding at dedicated track days that BMW Motorrad plans to organise in the future. There could also be dedicated events and rides for owners. In essence, the G 310 RR will give owners a ticket into the BMW Motorrad lifestyle, just like the BMW G 310 R and the G 310 GS do. Moreover, the company also offers dedicated merchandise including apparels and accessories to complete the package.

We feel BMW Motorrad’s logic of premiumness that comes with the brand isn’t substantial enough for prospective customers to choose the G 310 RR over the Apache RR 310 as the former does not get smartphone connectivity, rolls on tyres offering less performance, and doesn’t get the BTO kit as standard either. Paying Rs 20,000 over the Apache RR 310 for just the livery and badges don’t feel justifiable.
That said, we think the reason for making the BMW G 310 RR has got more to do with the global markets including Europe. It is an ideal product for the export market where the KTM RC 390 dominates the sales in the 300-400cc supersport segment. While the German marque has a naked and an adventure motorcycle to take on the likes of the Honda CB300R, KTM 390 Duke, KTM 390 Adventure and Royal Enfield Himalayan, the inclusion of a supersport will make the range more well-rounded. Moreover, BMW Motorrad has a healthy presence in the markets abroad, and the G 310 RR will be the perfect supersport for beginners.
