Expert's Opinion on G 310 R

Overview

The best of Bavaria and Bangalore?
The best of Bavaria and Bangalore?
  • The BMW G 310 R stands out as the German manufacturer’s streetfighter motorcycle in the sub-400cc segment. The bike features a sharp looking design and styling, which gives it a unique look. It is powered by the same engine as the TVS Apache RR 310, and gets a few important features like the TVS glide through technology or GTT, which is a low RPM assist feature. But is this enough to make the bike stand out when compared to its competitors?

Design

Premium Aggressiveness
Premium Aggressiveness
  • The BMW G 310 R has a typical streetfighter-like design and styling. It features a compact-looking headlight, which is flanked by muscular tank extensions, and panels on both sides
  • It stands out on the road and doesn’t fail to draw attention.
  • The large looking exhaust end-can feels a bit out of place. Its addition makes the bike feel a bit too bulky.

Performance & Mileage

Powerful enough for the city?
Powerful enough for the city?
  • The bike has a good bottom-end grunt. The motor is also quite tractable, and you can easily ride at slower speeds in higher gears
  • It has a low-rpm assist system. It allows the bike to crawl at speeds up to 35kmph in the first gear without any throttle or clutch modulation
  • The bike can easily cruise at highway speeds and can even be pushed till 100-110kmph without the engine feeling stressed.
  • The engine tends to feel stressed at speeds above 110kmph and doesn’t have good enough top-end performance

Handling

The best corner carver?
The best corner carver?
  • The G 310 R is really enjoyable on the twisties, as it tips into the corners quite effortlessly.
  • The brakes offer good stopping power and feel.
  • Tyres could have been better

Ride Quality

Balanced as all things should be?
Balanced as all things should be?
  • The suspension is nicely tuned and manages to offer a balanced ride quality. It can soak up most bumps and potholes without much trouble. Even mid-corner bumps are absorbed quite well and they don’t cause the bike to go off-balance.
  • The monoshock is also quite good, and even when set on the softest preload setting it doesn't bottom out when riding over sharp bumps.

Comfort & Storage

The best for the rider & pillion
The best for the rider & pillion
  • The well-padded seat makes riding it in the city and highway quite easy. The seat’s foam is quite thick and riders don’t have to worry about their butt sinking into the foam while riding for longer durations.
  • Shorter riders won’t have a hard time getting my foot down, thanks to the fairly low 785mm seat height.
  • The pillion seat is quite spacious and the well-padded nature makes it quite comfortable as well.

Features

Not a lot to offer
Not a lot to offer
  • The BMW G 310 R features a simple LCD console, which offers essential readouts like speed, fuel level, time, along with trip and odometer readouts. The console offers decent visibility under all lighting conditions, but under harsh sunlight, it is not that bright.
  • Other than this, the bike features LED lighting which adds a bit of premiumness to the bike overall.
  • Misses out on electronic riding aids such as a traction control system

Verdict

Should You Buy The BMW G 310 R?
Should You Buy The BMW G 310 R?
  • The BMW G310 R is a really nice streetfighter, but it fails to stand out as a value for money proposition. The bike, even with the good looks, decent performance, and good handling, is overshadowed by its rivals which are able to offer a lot more at a much lower price. Getting a BMW G 310 R only makes sense if you’re someone who is a big fan of the brand, and want something which offers a premium experience. Otherwise you’re better off looking into its rivals like the KTM 390 Duke.

Key Things to Know about G 310 R

Upside
  • Looks muscular and has attractive colour schemes
  • Sublime handling doesn’t come at the cost of harsh ride quality
  • Motor feels energetic but with less vibrations now
Downside
  • The LCD console feels dated and out of place on such a premium bike
  • Limited dealership network
  • Service costs are still on the higher side
Expert's Conclusion

BMW has managed to iron out the majority of the issues that stopped us from wholeheartedly recommending the Bavarian naked. It is a delight to ride in the twisties with enough power on tap to thrill you. It is also more affordable now, which bodes well for its positioning in the market. Wish it came with better tyres, though.
