You’ll Actually Have To Wait A While To Get A Toyota Land Cruiser 70 In Australia

Such a demand for an off-roader that’s nearly 40 years old is quite an impressive achievement

It’s not a surprise to have waiting periods for cars, considering the effects of the global semiconductor shortage and the COVID-19 pandemic. Toyota cars are no different, as if you want to buy a Land Cruiser 70 in Australia, reports suggest there’s a waiting list all the way up to 2024. Nope, this is not the new Land Cruiser LC300 that is also facing long periods, in fact this is an off-roader that’s almost 40 years old. Coincidentally, this waiting period is set to be completed right at the time the off-roader celebrates its 40th anniversary.

Such long waiting periods wouldn’t be a surprise for new models, but it's quite something when an old relic like the Land Cruiser 70 garners so much demand to this day. Sure, the Land Cruiser 70 first showed up in 1984, but the off-roader has gotten a lot of upgrades over the years. The current model comes with niceties such as a 6.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth and navigation, air conditioning, ABS, traction control as well as dual front airbags.

Under the hood, it is powered by a 4.5-litre turbocharged V8 diesel engine, making 205PS and 435Nm. It is paired to a 4-speed manual gearbox which sends power to all four wheels. Despite its age, it is no slouch when towing things around with a towing capacity of up to 3,500kg.

Yes, the new Toyota Land Cruiser LC300  is leagues above the J70, but it's quite an impressive feat for a model this old to garner the sort of demand it has. As for the LC300, the global delay is also affecting its potential return to India. When it does show up in India, it’ll rival luxury 4x4s such as the Land Rover Defender and Mercedes-Benz G-Class. It is likely to be priced above Rs 1.5 crore (ex-showroom).
