So how do you drive it? Using the two toggles on the steering yoke, with one for accelerating and the other for braking

The 2023 Japan Motor Show is just a couple of hours away and the manufacturers from the Land Of Rising Sun are busy showcasing their cool unveilings and new models. One interesting bit that caught our attention was a Land Cruiser equipped with Toyota’s Neo Steer, which is basically a yoke that eradicates the need of an accelerator and brake pedal.

So how do you drive your car then? Using the two toggles on the yoke to control the acceleration and braking. Yes, it does seem a bit weird at first, considering that you have to apply your throttle and brake inputs using your hand rather than your feet. But it does seem to make sense when you look at the carmaker’s reasoning.

For starters, this concept has taken inspiration from motorcycle handlebars, by placing the two vital controls in the steering wheel, just like all your bikes. And considering that there are no pedals on the floor, you now have extra room to stretch out. The design of the yoke also frees up room for easier ingress and egress.

But the best advantage is for those with limb impairments. You don’t have to modify your car to drive it now, considering that all the important controls are right at your fingertips, making things all the more easier. The only thing that remains to be seen is if you intend to take the Land Cruiser off-road to see how it performs in this setup.

Apart from the Neo Steer, Toyota will also be showcasing the Land Cruiser Se electric SUV concept, EPU monocoque electric pickup truck concept and much more. Stay tuned for more details.
