Finally, Jawa Answers “Kitna Deti Hai?”

The modern Jawa manages a good claimed efficiency figure

  • The number has been certified by ARAI.
  • Expect real-world numbers to differ.
  • We will be testing the Jawa and the Forty Two soon.
  • Jawa Mileage Revealed

Jawa has finally answered the questions Indians love to ask the most: “Yeh kitna deti hai (What’s the fuel efficiency?)” as it reveals the ARAI-tested figure of 37.5kmpl. Both the Jawa and the Forty Two return the same figures as the two are more or less the same motorcycle, albeit with different ergos and colours.

While a few motorcycle manufacturers still rely on the ARAI method, the new WMTC (World Motorcycle Test Cycle) standard is being adopted by global players. The latter is a more homogenised testing method which also allows the European Union to regulate the emission norms. The WMTC tested figure of the Jawa’s main rival, the Royal Enfield Classic 350, is 40.8kmpl. In the same test method, the Mahindra Mojo returned 29.8kmpl. Since the motor for the Jawa is derived from the Mojo’s mill, we can expect a similar figure or a slightly higher fuel efficiency number. This is because the Jawa’s 296cc single-cylinder engine has a stronger mid-range. All above figures are available on the Siam India website.

We are soon going to get our hands on the Jawa or the Forty Two for a full-fledged road test, after which we will update this story with our test figures as well. Until then, you can read our first ride review of both the Jawa and the Forty Two here.

Jawa was resurrected in 2018, operating mainly in the neo retro genre. The company began operations with two bikes -- the Jawa and the Forty Two, both which were powered by a 296cc single-cylinder mill derived from the Mahindra Mojo. It pumps out 27PS and 28Nm which is delivered in a very mellow manner. Of the two, the Jawa is reminiscent of the Jawas of yore while the Forty Two is the funky rendition of the same.
