The Toyota Glanza Is Set To Become Toyota’s First CNG Car In India

The 2022 Maruti Suzuki Baleno will get the CNG option first

  • Will use the same 1.2-litre DualJet petrol engine, but detuned in the CNG mode.

  • Likely to be offered in the G, and S trims.

  • Price premium is expected to be around Rs 1 lakh.

Toyota recently launched the 2022 Glanza, a counterpart to the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, which finally has some identity of its own unlike before. Now sources suggest that Toyota is set to give the Glanza a CNG variant soon, which also means the Maruti Suzuki Baleno will get this option too. This would mark the debut of Toyota’s first ever CNG model in their Indian model lineup.

In the standard setup, the Glanza is powered by a 90PS 1.2-litre DualJet petrol engine, paired with a standard 5-speed manual and an optional 5-speed AMT. Since the Maruti Suzuki Dzire CNG uses the same engine, produces 77PS and 98.5Nm when running on CNG and is limited to a 5-speed manual gearbox, the Glanza CNG should utilise the same setup.

As for what variant it’ll be offered in, we think it might be offered in the mid-spec G and second-to-top S trims (Delta and Zeta in the Baleno) going by the Maruti Dzire CNG.

While a specific launch timeline for the Toyota Glanza CNG is yet to surface, we expect it to happen soon, with Maruti Suzuki likely bridging it first in the Baleno. Currently, the Glanza retails from Rs 6.39 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) onwards. Expect the CNG option to come at a premium of close to Rs 1 lakh over its petrol-powered counterpart. As for rivals it’ll only have its counterpart, the Maruti Baleno for company in its segment. Meanwhile, the standard model takes on the Tata Altroz, Hyundai i20, and Honda Jazz.
