  • Celerio CNG to launch in January 2022.
  • In CNG the power will be detuned from the petrol’s 67PS.
  • Likely to be offered only with a manual transmission.
  • Could be limited to lower-spec trims to keep costs in check.
  • Could command a Rs 90,000 premium over the standard model.

Maruti Suzuki will kick start its 2022 innings with the launch of the Celerio CNG this month. The eco-friendly hatchback will square off against the Wagon R CNG and upcoming Tata Tiago CNG.

The Celerio will continue to utilise its 67PS 1-litre K10C three-cylinder mill, however the power will drop when running on CNG. Power figures are yet to be revealed, but the S-Presso CNG with an older version of this engine (K10B) develops 59PS, and one can expect similar numbers in the Celerio. Transmission option is likely to be limited to a 5-speed manual to keep costs in check.

With a claimed efficiency of 26.88kmpl, the Celerio petrol is the most fuel efficient petrol car in India. These numbers are expected to be bettered by the upcoming CNG model.

The CNG option could be limited to the Celerio’s lower-spec trims, probably the LXI and VXI. Therefore, it won’t get niceties like an infotainment system, keyless entry with push-button start, alloy wheels, and front fog lamps. However, basics like an air conditioner, power windows, dual airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors will be present.

The Celerio CNG is expected to command a premium of around Rs 90,000 over the petrol model that starts from Rs 4.99 lakh (ex-showroom).
