Maruti’s in-house developed 1.5-litre diesel engine could make a comeback in 2021

Maruti Suzuki has discontinued the Ertiga diesel well ahead of the March 31 BS6 emission norms deadline. This news comes right in time when Maruti Suzuki has announced it has cleared its BS4 inventory ahead of the BS6 deadline. The manufacturer has dropped the diesel variants of the Ertiga from its official website. It is the second Maruti diesel car after the Ciaz to be discontinued due to BS6 emission norms. 

The Ertiga came with Maruti Suzuki’s in-house developed 1.5-litre DDiS diesel engine that made 95PS of power and  225Nm of torque. It was available with a 6-speed manual transmission only. The diesel variants of the Ertiga could make a comeback in the BS6 era as sources have informed us that Maruti could launch the first BS6-diesel car in 2021. Further, the BS6-compliant Ertiga diesel has been spotted testing in India. 

Currently, the Ertiga is available with two BS6 engine options: a 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre CNG option. The petrol motor develops 105PS and 138Nm while the CNG variant puts out 92PS and 122Nm. As standard, the Ertiga is offered with a 5-speed manual while the 4-speed torque converter is limited to the petrol variants. The petrol variants also come with Maruti’s 12v mild hybrid system which adds features like torque assist and start stop functionality. 

The Ertiga is priced from Rs 7.59 lakh to Rs 10.13 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It will lock horns with the upcoming Mahindra Marazzo petrol
