Maruti Suzuki has silently discontinued the Ciaz diesel ahead of the April 2020 BS6 deadline. India’s largest car manufacturer won’t be having a diesel portfolio in the initial phase of the BS6 era. And the Ciaz diesel is the first model to face the axe.

The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz utilised an in-house-developed 1.5-litre DDiS engine developing 95PS of power and 225Nm of torque. This motor can be had with a 6-speed manual only. The 1.5-litre DDiS motor is Maruti’s first in-house-developed four-cylinder diesel engine and we must admit, it has got it spot-on. Though the power delivery is linear, this engine is known for its refined, fun-to-drive and refined nature. Read our first drive review of the Ciaz diesel right here.

Maruti Suzuki could bring an upgraded BS6-compliant version of the 1.5-litre DDiS engine in 2021 based on customer demand. If it makes a comeback, we expect it to be plonked in the Ciaz, Ertiga and the updated Vitara Brezza.

Recently, Maruti Suzuki updated the petrol variants of the Ciaz to meet BS6 norms. It utilises the tried and tested 105PS 1.5-litre K15B engine albeit with upgrades. Along with the BS6 update, the carmaker also introduced a sportier Ciaz S, which comes with a host of sporty cosmetic bits.

Prices for the Ciaz currently start from Rs 8.32 lakh and go up to Rs 11.10 lakh (ex-showroom). It rivals the petrol variants of the Hyundai Verna, Honda City, Toyota Yaris and the upcoming Skoda Rapid TSI, Volkswagen Vento BS6.
