The boys in blue go green by switching to sustainable solutions

Yamaha has announced a switch to sustainably produced aluminium and also recycled plastics which will be used in the manufacturing of its commuter bikes/scooters in its South East Asian markets (to begin with). It has been aggressively moving towards its carbon neutrality 2050 goals and is making both big and small changes to get there.

Yamaha claims that it has been working on recycled polypropylene (thermoplastic) for a long while now. Polypropylene is used to make body panels and other plastic parts you find on bikes and scooters. Yamaha says its current processing method of recycled plastics is offering greater results in terms of finish, quality and durability. It commented that these recycled plastics are “made only from pre-consumer materials with a traceable manufacturing history and no risk of containing environmentally hazardous substances", which simply means it is using materials from environmentally safe sources.

Currently, Yamaha intends on using this recycled plastic material only in its commuter vehicles for Southeast Asia starting in 2023. Following that, Yamaha intends to incorporate recycled polypropylene in other product categories as well. Besides this, Yamaha has also been exploring sustainable fuel options. Recently in India, it's been updating its portfolio with E20 (Ethanol mix fuel) compatibility
