The Hyundai Ioniq 5 finally has a debut date in India! Hyundai’s modern, premium EV is set to arrive on December 20, becoming the carmaker’s new flagship vehicle in the country.
It’ll be a rival for EVs of different body styles, such as the Mini Cooper SE, Volvo XC40 Recharge, BMW i4 and its own platform cousin, the Kia EV6.
Hyundai Ioniq 5 features
The Ioniq 5 is based on the same E-GMP platform as the Kia EV6 that already exists in India. Unlike the segment-agnostic Kia, the Hyundai EV has distinct hatchback styling, although it’s much larger than most hatchbacks. It has retro design cues such as square headlight and taillight elements and a boxy aesthetic overall.
Inside, the Ioniq 5 features a floating dual-screen panel that houses the driver’s instrumentation display and infotainment touchscreen. This panel even has a magnetic pad on the driver’s side where you can mount your phone or some of your clippy notes with magnets. The minimalist, tech-laden cabin has a wide array of creature comforts and amenities including a large panoramic sunroof and power sliding and reclining seats.
Other features should include driver-assistance tech such as forward-collision prevention, lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control. In addition, the Ioniq 5 will likely get V2L (vehicle-to-load) tech to power external devices, appliances and even EVs such as electric bicycles.
Expected powertrains
Globally, the Ioniq 5 is offered with Standard Range and Long Range variants, both with rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) powertrains. The standard variant has a 58kWh battery pack, while the extended-range variant packs 72.6kWh. Depending on the variant, the Ioniq 5 can deliver up to 480km of range (WLTP), slightly lower than the EV6 that has a 77.4kWh battery pack.

Electric Car Based On Citroen C3 To Be Called eC3, Debut Soon
We expect that the Ioniq 5 will be imported in the form of complete knock-down kits (CKD) to be locally assembled. This should help it undercut the EV6, priced at around Rs 60 lakh onward (ex-showroom).
