We’ve gotten quite a few updates on Mahindra’s plans for its upcoming cars, including the next-gen Scorpio. Now, in a conversation with our sister channel, Powerdrift, Veejay Nakra, the CEO of Mahindra’s Auto Division, has revealed a few details on the arrival of the next-gen Scorpio.
The Scorpio will arrive after the new XUV500, which is set to launch between Q2 and Q3 2021, mostly in July. This means the next-gen Scorpio could debut later this year and go on sale by early-2022. That said, we’ve gotten quite a few glimpses of the upcoming SUV thanks to multiple spy shots.
Despite retaining its silhouette, the Scorpio looks a little beefed up in terms of its size. Updates include new LED headlights and tail lights as well as new 17-inch alloy wheels. This is followed by a complete makeover inside, with a brand new layout and multiple feature additions. These include a single-pane sunroof for the first time, push-button start, analogue dials, and a multi-info display. Expect the infotainment to be bigger in size and probably feature connected car tech.
Under the hood, the Scorpio will get the Thar’s 150PS 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and 130PS 2.2-litre diesel engines. However, these could be offered in a more powerful state of tune, mated to 6-speed manual and torque converter automatic options. We may see a 4x4 drivetrain as well which was discontinued during the transition to BS6 emission norms.
The next-gen Scorpio could be sold alongside the current model under the ‘ScorpioN’ or ‘Scorpio Sting’ moniker according to the trademarks filed by Mahindra. Expect it to be priced at a slight premium over the current model which retails from Rs 11.99 lakh to Rs 16.52 lakh (ex-showroom).
