Unlike Skoda, Volkswagen India Won’t Have A Sub-4 Metre SUV Offering For India

The Taigun and Virtus will remain the entry-level point for the VW brand, and the German carmaker will be focussing on bringing products only above them

It’s known news that Skoda India is preparing a sub-4 metre SUV, which is being readied for a market launch in 2025. And if you’re someone who’s hoping that this model will be spawning a VW version, we have some bad news for you. Volkswagen has confirmed that the upcoming Skoda model won’t spawn its own version of a sub-4 metre SUV.

This is despite the fact that the upcoming Skoda sub-4 metre SUV will use the same MQB-A0 IN platform that underpins the Virtus/Slavia and Taigun/Kushaq. Rather, the German carmaker’s focus is on the premium side of things, and will be introducing models above the Taigun and Virtus.

This means the India 2.0 models – the Virtus and Taigun – will remain the entry points for the VW brand. Also, the wheelbase of the MQB-A0 IN platform can’t be stretched any further and you can’t expect any bigger cars based on this platform. The Virtus and Slavia are the biggest cars that this platform can support and any models coming above it will have to use a different architecture.

This brings us to the next question: what’s next for VW? The German carmaker recently conducted its Annual Brand Conference, where it revealed its plans for 2024. Volkswagen will be introducing new GT variants for the Taigun and Virtus with cosmetic enhancements. The new Taigun GT variants will be launched in April, while the Virtus will get them in the second half of 2024.

That’s not it. Volkswagen will also be foraying into the electric vehicle segment by end-2024 with the ID.4 electric SUV. It boasts a clean exterior design, a minimalist interior with plenty of technology and features as well as multiple powertrain options to cater the needs of a wide range of buyers. The final spec for India are yet to be determined. But if you had your eyes on one, then head to our in-depth unveiling story for further details.
