However, it will still be providing technical support to Bharat NCAP, India’s new crash test agency

Global NCAP has announced that it will soon stop assessing new car crash tests under its ‘Safer Cars For India’ campaign. This comes after India announced Bharat NCAP, our very own in-house crash test assessment program, on August 22. Global NCAP plans to wrap up its campaign by the end of this year, considering that Bharat NCAP will kickstart in October.

The main reason for Global NCAP to stop testing cars sold in India is that it doesn’t want to be seen as a rival to Bharat NCAP. Commenting on the same, David Ward, executive president, Global NCAP, said “There may be another 10 models that we've got in the pipeline but that will be it. We absolutely don’t want to be seen as a rival to Bharat NCAP.”

That being said, Global NCAP will still be relevant in our country, offering support and technical knowledge for Bharat NCAP to conduct tests. For the same, Global NCAP has signed a MoU (memorandum of understanding) with the Central Institute of Road Transport for the same.

Global NCAP’s role has been instrumental in India, creating awareness about vehicle safety. The agency has tested plenty of cars and has even made the norms stricter, bringing the public up to speed regarding the importance of safety in a car. A few cars that have performed very well in Global NCAP include the VW Virtus, Skoda Kushaq, Mahindra XUV700, and Tata Nexon
