There are many reasons why Ather will not roll out a sub-Rs 1 lakh electric scooter anytime soon
A test mule of an Ather electric scooter was spotted on test in Bengaluru recently, and while online reports claim it is an affordable variant of the 450X, we believe it could be a 450X decked with features set to arrive with the brand’s upcoming OTA update.
Tarun Mehta, CEO of Ather Energy, has made it clear earlier that the brand was not planning to develop a low-cost variant of the 450X, as it would not be economically feasible. He mentioned that making a sub-Rs 1 lakh electric scooter would imply the product would not conform to Ather’s standards in terms of range, performance and features.
Rather, during the launch of AtherStack 5.0, the company had mentioned that features like cruise control, crawl control and advanced regenerative braking were in the pipeline, and slated to be released in the next OTA update. The brand has been testing these features out and would continue to comprehensively carry out real world functionality tests prior to rolling them out to owners.

Hence, given the brand’s reluctance to dilute its performance-oriented package and its bullishness on enhancing the features on the Ather 450X, we believe that the test mule spotted is one of the units being used by the brand to test out new features, that it may roll-out with the upcoming AtherStack 6.0 update.
