Mahindra Scorpio N vs XUV700: Similar Diesel Power Plants, Different States Of Tune

Both SUVs get Mahindra’s latest all-aluminium oil burner. Here’s how the automatic variants perform in real life

The Mahindra XUV700, and more recently, the Scorpio N, have reaffirmed the marque’s commitment to building modern SUVs that Indians want. Some of that is down to the engines, as alongside an all-new mStallion petrol engine, the two SUVs also get the second-generation of Mahindra’s 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine, now an all-aluminium unit, that provides more power without compromising on emissions and refinement.

The engines are offered in different states of tune, since the XUV700 is built for urban and highway driving, while the Scorpio N is for off-roading. And because of this difference, the monocoque vs ladder frame construction of the two also play a big role in their on-road performance.

We have tested the higher-spec, higher-output automatic versions of both SUVs, considering only the two-wheel drive (2WD) variants. Here’s how they compare:

What the numbers say

Metric

Torque (automatic)

400Nm

450Nm

Drivetrain

RWD/4WD

FWD/AWD

Mahindra’s highway-focused XUV700 gets the higher output of the two. There’s 10PS and 10Nm difference in the manual transmission (MT) variants and a wider 10PS/50Nm gap when it comes to the automatics. Both SUVs get a six-speed MT as standard, while a six-speed torque converter automatic is also available.

The lower-spec diesel variants of both SUVs are offered in a lower state of tune. The Scorpio N is good for 130PS and 300Nm and the XUV700 gets 155PS and 360Nm.

Acceleration test: Numbers speak the truth

Test

Mahindra Scorpio N

9.67 seconds

20-80kmph kickdown

6.87 seconds

5.85 seconds

Quarter mile time

18.09 seconds

16.94 seconds

When it comes to outright on-road performance, the XUV700’s higher output (and, likely, relatively lower weight) makes it much quicker than the Scorpio N. While the off-roader is no slouch, the XUV700 simply beats it in acceleration, making it the faster and quicker of the two SUVs.

This stays true when you consider the XUV700’s AWD version, too. It reaches 0-100kmph in 10.09 seconds. We are yet to test the 4x4 Scorpio N.

Braking performance:

Mahindra XUV700

Braking distance 100-0kmph

44.85 metres

37.65 metres

Braking distance 80-0kmph

28.14 metres

22.19 metres

The Mahindra XUV700’s relatively less heavy monocoque underpinnings enable it to deliver a better braking performance than the body-on-frame Scorpio N. The XUV700 is almost six metres quicker to come to a stop from 80kmph and manages to increase the gap to 7.2 metres in the braking test from 100kmph. Both SUVs get disc brakes front and rear.

Fuel economy matters

City

12.37kmpl

17.19kmpl

Highway

16.23kmpl

16.57kmpl

Let’s be real – most buyers would prefer to get diesels not for the performance, but for fuel efficiency. In these terms, the XUV700 offers good fuel economy in city driving conditions, while the Scorpio N’s figure is respectable, nonetheless. However, both SUVs are neck and neck in highway driving conditions, where the sixth gear allows for more relaxed cruising.

Conclusion

Mahindra Scorpio N

Mahindra XUV700

Ex-showroom price

Rs 11.99 lakh to Rs 23.90 lakh

Rs 13.45 lakh to Rs 24.95 lakh

Of the two SUVs, the Scorpio N seems more affordable than the XUV700, but keep in mind that the SUV’s 4x4 variant’s prices are introductory and will increase in the coming months.

In conclusion, the choice boils down to how you want to use your SUV and how long you are willing to wait for it. If amenities and outright performance are the priority, the XUV700 offers that and then some.

If you want a rugged and commodious SUV with a proper 4x4 system, the Scorpio N stands out. It won’t leave you wanting in terms of features and creature comforts, either.
