Hyundai To Offer The Exter With Over 40 Safety Features And 6 Standard Airbags

The Exter will be a petrol-only offering, borrowing the Grand i10 Nios’s petrol and CNG powertrains

  • Six airbags to be a segment-first with the Exter.

  • Other safety features on board to include ESC, VSM and a reversing camera.

  • It will also get 3-point seatbelts and seatbelt reminders for all seats as standard.

  • Expected features include a single-pane sunroof and a big touchscreen unit.

  • To get a 1.2-litre petrol engine with 5-speed MT and AMT options.

  • Launch expected in June, starting price could be Rs 6 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Hyundai Exter will soon be entering the Indian market as a rival to the Tata Punch. Although its launch is still some time away, the carmaker has now revealed some details of the micro SUV’s safety kit. Hyundai is already accepting bookings for the Exter for Rs 11,000.

Standard Safety Equipment

One of the biggest and most important highlights of the Exter’s safety net is the provision of six airbags as standard, a first for a micro SUV in India. Apart from the airbags, the Exter’s standard safety kit will also include 3-point seatbelts and seatbelt reminders for all seats, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors.

The Exter will also come with more than 40 safety features, including electronic stability control (ESC), vehicle stability management (VSM), ISOFIX child seat anchorages, and a reversing camera. It will also get segment-first features such as dashcam with dual cameras and tyre pressure monitor.

Other Tech On Board

Hyundai hasn’t shared the features list of the Exter yet but we suspect it will get a big touchscreen unit, a single-pane sunroof, wireless phone charging and a digitised driver’s display. It will also likely come with keyless entry, push-button start/stop, and cruise control.

Petrol And CNG Powertrains Only

The Exter will get the same petrol and CNG powertrains as the Grand i10 Nios. These are a 1.2-litre petrol engine with 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed AMT and the same unit with an optional CNG kit. While Hyundai hasn’t shared the output figures of the two powertrains, we believe they will be identical to those of the Grand i10 Nios. The CNG unit will come with the 5-speed MT only.

Variants And Expected Price

It will be sold in five broad variants: EX, S, SX, SX (O) and SX (O) Connect. We believe the Exter will have a starting price of Rs 6 lakh (ex-showroom), with an expected launch in June. Its main rivals in India will be the Tata Punch and the Maruti Ignis.
