Prices for the base spec Hyundai Exter start from Rs 5.99 lakh and packs a digital instrument cluster and six airbags despite being bare bones

It has been just a couple of months that Hyundai has launched the Exter micro SUV in India. And this time, we’ve covered multiple variants of the Exter in detail. But somehow, the base-spec variant was hard to come by. But we now finally have its pictures, so let’s dive straight into the nitty-gritty of the Hyundai Exter EX, starting with the design.

Being the entry-level variant, the Exter EX doesn’t feature any LED lighting up front. The headlights and even the H-shaped DRLs flanking the bonnet are all halogen units. The body-coloured bumper gets a silver skid plate, which adds a bit of muscle to its styling.

There are no snazzy alloys in the profile. It actually gets the smallest 14-inch wheels in the Exter’s lineup and that too without  wheel covers. The wheel arch cladding and the side sills are finished in black along with the black door handles and ORVMs. Even the styling element on the C-pillar gets a black finish.

Unlike the front lighting setup, the taillights on the base-spec Exter are LED units. The boxy taillights are connected by a thick black panel that houses the Hyundai logo in the middle. And just like at the front, the rear bumper gets a silver-finished skid plate as well.

If the exterior of the Exter was a bit misleading for a base-spec model, the interior isn’t. You clearly feel the built-to-cost factor here. It starts with the dashboard, which misses out on the 3D pattern on the passenger side.

Then there’s the empty space within the infotainment bezel, and even the HVAC controls are old-school dials without a digital display of any sort. The theme is black, contrasted by silver elements and panels. Of course, you won’t find any leather inside this cabin, with the seats, too, made of fabric.

Feature wise, the Hyundai Exter EX sports a semi-digital driver’s display, manual AC, power windows (front), driver seat height adjustment, and adjustable rear headrests. Although, things are a bit better on the safety front as the Exter packs six airbags, ABS with EBD, 3-point seatbelts for all passengers with reminders, electronic stability control (EX(O)), and hill hold assist(EX(O)) as standard fitments.

The Exter is available with the same 83PS/114Nm, 1.2-litre petrol found in the Grand i10 Nios. The EX trim only gets the 5-speed manual transmission, while the AMT can be had from the S trim onwards. The Exter can also be had with a CNG kit, but that too is available from the S trim and onwards.

The Hyundai Exter EX is priced at Rs 5.99 lakh (ex-showroom), while prices go up to Rs 10.09 for the micro SUV’s fully loaded trim. It rivals the Tata Punch and Maruti Ignis, while also being an alternative to a few trims of the Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite.
