  • Ford Figo petrol AT likely to command a premium of around Rs 1 lakh.
  • It’s the only hatch in its segment to come with a proper automatic transmission.
  • Could be offered in more than one variant.
  • It rivals the Maruti Suzuki Swift and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios.

Ford India had discontinued the Figo and Aspire’s automatic variants in January 2020. But now, the carmaker is once again ready to re-launch the petrol-powered Figo automatic by the end of July. However, it won’t get the 1.5-litre petrol engine that was available previously.

Instead, the automatic variant will get a 96PS 1.2-litre Dragon petrol engine paired with the EcoSport’s 6-speed torque converter. This will ensure the hatch is eligible for tax benefits as it’s under four metres and has an engine capacity below 1,200cc.

In a segment where AMT’s are given priority for their lower cost, we are glad Ford chose a proper torque converter automatic for the Figo. This makes it the only model in its segment to come with an out-and-out automatic transmission. The Figo’s closest rivals --  Maruti Suzuki Swift and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios -- come with an AMT, which isn’t as refined as a torque converter.

Also, Ford could offer the Figo AT in more than one variant to make it a tempting proposition. Earlier, only the mid-spec Titanium trim had an automatic transmission.

The Figo AT will likely command a premium of almost a lakh over its manual equivalent. Currently, the Figo petrol is available in three variants and priced between Rs 5.82 lakh and Rs 7.27 lakh (ex-showroom).
