The Yamaha YZF-R9’s Existence Is Confirmed

There is a high likelihood the R9 could be unveiled at EICMA this year

Yamaha YZF-R9 Incoming?

Nearly a year after the ‘YZF-R9’ moniker was trademarked in India, there’s new development around it. Yamaha has now filed for ‘figurative trademarks’ (trademarks for stylisation, graphics, layouts, etc) for the R9 sportbike, which is essentially the logo that’ll appear on the bike.

While the applications have only been filed in Australia, other markets will soon be covered as well. The logo itself is somewhat similar to what we’ve seen on some other bikes in Yamaha’s ‘R’ series of sports machines, with the tail of the R being connected to the number.

So, what will the YZF-R9 be? For starters, it will be a more powerful and better-equipped elder brother to the Yamaha YZF-R7.  The R9 will probably borrow the MT-09’s potent 890cc, inline-three engine that makes 119PS and 93Nm (Europe-spec bike), thus neatly slotting right in-between the accessible 73PS YZF-R7 and the phenomenal 200PS YZF-R1.

Along with the motor, the YZF-R9 will most likely nab the full suite of the IMU-based electronics, quickshifter and adjustable suspension too from the MT-09. As far as the design is concerned, judging from the baby R15 V4, all the way up to the YZF-R1, one wouldn’t be wrong to expect the R9 to be an enchanting lad as well.

That said, even if the YZF-R9 does make its way to the production line, it’ll likely be quite some time before it ever makes its way to India. But, as they say, ‘Hope Sustains Life.’ So, if the kind folks at Yamaha India are listening, the R9 will be something that us Indians will love!
