Range Rover SUV To Get An All-electric Powertrain

It’ll be the first electric Range Rover SUV when it debuts in 2024

At the 2022 Range Rover unveiling, the carmaker announced that its flagship SUV will be the first-ever Land Rover to receive an all-electric powertrain in 2024. It’ll be followed by five other EVs, part of Land Rover’s ‘Reimagine’ strategy that aims at having battery-electric options for all its models by 2030.

There was no official word on the specs, but it could have a pair of axle-mounted electric motors similar to the Jaguar I-Pace. In the I-Pace, these electric motors are equally matched for power, and together produce 400PS and 696Nm. Its 90kWh battery is good for a WLTP-tested combined range of 409km to 470km. It is difficult to gauge  range figures for the all-electric Range Rover, but it’s likely to have the performance to match its fossil-fueled counterparts.

The 2022 Range Rover makes 300PS to 400PS of power from its Ingenium engines, each of which is paired with a standard 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The 3.0-litre 6-cylinder engine has an optional plug-in hybrid system with a 31.8kWh battery and a 142PS motor that delivers an EV-only range of 100km. It’s also available in the Range Rover P510E variant that scoots to 100kmph in just 5.3 seconds! We expect the Range Rover EV to be on par with its stablemates in terms of performance, features and capability, but also likely to be heavier than the already 2.5-ton SUV. So take these range and acceleration estimates with a grain of salt.

Nevertheless, similar to the 2022 Range Rover, the 2024 EV will be luxurious and laden with impressive technology and features. We could see it coming to India sometime after its global launch. It’s too early to know how much the electric SUV could cost, but prices are likely to be well above Rs 2 crore if it is launched here. It’ll sit above the Jaguar I-Pace and lock horns with the Audi e-tron. With the advent of more premium electric vehicles in India, the Range Rover’s list of rivals could grow.
