CONFIRMED: Mahindra Thar 5-door Will Not Get The Watts Links Suspension From Scorpio N

Rather, the SUV appears to have a heavily revised version of the conventional multilink suspension from the existing three-door Thar

  • It will not get the Watts link suspension from Mahindra Scorpio N.
  • Watts link suspension in Scorpio N limits side-to-side motion at the rear significantly
  • Thar five-door is expected to be launched in 2023.

Earlier, based on spy shots, we had reported that the Mahindra Thar five-door SUV will get the Scorpio N’s rear suspension with Watts link. This particular suspension has proved to be a game changer when it comes to the Scorpio N’s ride and handling manners. However, recent clearer spy shots have confirmed that the Thar five-door will not get this setup.

Rather, the five-door variant of the Thar will continue to use the multi-link suspension setup, which is the same as the smaller three-door model. However, the suspension isn’t exactly the same as the three-door model from the looks of it. So you can still expect the five-door model to have different characteristics than the smaller SUV, which has plenty of side-to-side and bobbing movements.

The SUV manufacturer introduced the Watts link suspension layout in the Scorpio N, which boasts incredibly neat ride and handling manners for such a tall and heavy SUV. To know how this layout works, R Velusamy, senior VP, Mahindra Rise, gives a detailed rundown of this tech in the Scorpio N unveil:

This particular tech makes a whole world difference when it comes to dynamics. This is what we have to say when we drove the Mahindra Scorpio N - “For a big ladder-frame SUV it is incredibly well mannered. It doesn't bob or bounce uncontrollably. Just like when you hustle it into a corner, you'll find that it rolls just a bit and remains admirably composed for this format of a vehicle. So the Scorpio N will feel comfortable at low speeds, gobble up bumps and speed breakers at city speeds, cruise confidently on the highway, and will feel at home on broken roads too.”

That said, the Thar five-door will still get a handful of changes over the three-door model which have been detailed in this report. We expect the wraps to come off in 2023 and prices could start around the Rs 15-lakh mark. The larger SUV will lock horns with the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Jimny five-door and Force Gurkha five-door
