The Mahindra off-roader in its upcoming 5-door version will offer a lot more features than its current 3-door version

The Mahindra Thar has set a benchmark in its segment and none of its rivals (Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Force Gurkha) have come anywhere close to the success that the Thar has enjoyed in India. As we are nearing the launch of the Mahindra Thar 5-door, let's take a deep dive into the features that the more practical off-roader is expected to get over the Maruti Suzuki Jimny.

Sunroof

A sunroof has become a top priority for the average Indian car buyer. Whether it is a sedan, or an SUV, customers nowadays expect carmakers to provide them with a sunroof. As per spy shots, the upcoming Thar 5-door will feature a sunroof which the Jimny doesn't offer.

A Bigger 10.25 Inch Touchscreen

Mahindra_Thar_5-Door

The Thar 5-door is set to get a new 10.25-inch touchscreen (the current 3-door Thar gets a 7-inch touchscreen). The new touch touchscreen is also a bigger unit than the Jimny’s 9-inch unit. The bigger screen will also feature wireless smartphone connectivity, but the Maruti off-roader already gets that.

Centre Armrests

The Thar 5-door variant will provide the comfort of a centre armrest both for the front and rear seats. The Jimny misses out on a centre armrest as its cabin is more focussed on being an off-roader than getting points for interior comfort.

Dual-Zone Climate Control

We are expecting Mahindra to add dual-zone climate control to the already exciting feature list of the new Thar 5-door, enhancing its cabin experience. The Jimny only gets auto AC which is a more typical feature for mass market models.

Rear AC Vents

The 5-door Mahindra Thar is mainly about the rear seat experience over the regular Thar. As such, it is set to feature rear AC vents for added comfort and quick cooling for the rear occupants. The Jimny does not feature rear AC vents either and solely relies on the front AC vents to provide cooling to the rear passengers.

Rear Disc Brakes

Rear disc brakes are offered on the Thar 5-door over the Maruti Suzuki Jimny, providing it with better stopping power for its increased mass. Maruti offers drum brakes for the rear wheels of its compact off-roader which is typical for most compact mass-market models in India.

360-degree Camera

An increasingly popular feature in mass-market SUVs today is a 360-degree camera. It’s useful not only while parking larger cars, like the 5-door Thar, but will be handy for off-road adventures too. As per spy shots, we are likely to see a 360-degree camera on the new Thar. The Jimny comes equipped with a reverse parking camera with rear parking sensors.

Front parking Sensors

The 5-door version of the Mahindra Thar is expected to get front parking sensors, this will surely make parking the rugged SUV much more convenient. The Jimny only features rear parking sensors.

Digital Drivers Display

Another premium feature expected to elevate the cabin experience of the Thar 5-door, as per its spy shots, is a digital driver display (likely a 10.25 inch unit) from the XUV400 EV. The Jimny misses out on this feature as well as it sticks to an analog setup with a design inspired by the older generations of the Maruti Suzuki off-roader.

Wireless Charging

Another modern feature which we are likely to see on the new 5-door version of the Thar over the Maruti Jimny is wireless charging. This is another upmarket feature for increased practicality and key for a clutter-free centre console.

What About The Prices?

The Maruti Jimny is better equipped in terms of features compared to the current 3-door variant of the Mahindra Thar. While the 5-door Thar will not only be bigger than the Jimny 5-door, it will also offer more comforts and will be priced at a notable premium for those reasons The Jimny is priced from  Rs. 12.74 Lakh to 14.96 Lakh while the current Thar has a starting price of Rs. 11.25 Lakh and goes up to 17.60 Lakh . Mahindra will offer the 5-door Thar with both rear-wheel-drive and 4WD variants, but it is still expected to carry a starting price of Rs 15 lakh.
