  • Mahindra Thar five-door interior seen for the first time.
  • Test mule seen with two individual rear seats, final model expected to get a bench.
  • Roofliner, a front centre armrest and sunglass holder are notable additions.
  • Infotainment system likely to be a larger eight-inch unit from Scorpio N.
  • Launch is expected to happen in 2023.

We all know that Mahindra has been working on the longer five-door Thar for a while now. The family-sized off-roader has always been on the radar of automotive paparazzi ever since it set a wheel on public roads. The latest set of spy shots and videos give us a first-hand look at the SUV’s interior and by the looks of it, the Thar five-door will have a couple of unique bits over the three-door model.

But before that, let us address the main question: how is the five-door Thar’s rear cabin? Despite having an extra set of doors, this test mule had two separate seats like the smaller three-door model. However, Mahindra could plonk in a bench seat capable of carrying three occupants in the final production model. The manufacturer could also be using its existing rear seats on the test mule to work out some final seat positions for the five-door model. Plus, Mahindra could give it a third row, making it a seven-seater.

The dashboard design and layout is similar to the standard three-door Thar. However, the recess for the infotainment system is now bigger, indicating that it could get the larger eight-inch touchscreen unit from the Mahindra Scorpio N. Eagle-eyed viewers will also notice the presence of a roof-liner, a detail absent in the three-door model, indicating that it could be the fixed hard top model.

There are more changes that are exclusive to the five-door model. For instance, it gets a centre armrest for the front row occupants, improving the comfort quotient. Also, there’s a sunglass holder present on the roof, while the roof-mounted speakers have been deleted and have probably been shifted to the doors.

All these additions are indeed welcome and should make the five-door Thar a more practical SUV to live with. The wraps are expected to come off in 2023 and the SUV will command a premium over the three-door model that is priced from Rs 13.59 lakh (ex-showroom). The upcoming SUV will lock horns with the Force Gurkha five-door and the upcoming five-door Maruti Jimny. For more details about the five-door Thar, check out this report.
