Hyundai Ioniq 5: We Put This Futuristic Looking EV Through Its Paces

It’s no doubt that the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is one the most futuristic electric vehicles available in the Indian market. It looks dope, has a very pleasant and spacious cabin experience, and even has decent poke. So when this retro mod-looking EV landed in our ZigWheels office for a very short span of time, we were itching to get it tested for performance.
So let’s get cracking. But before that, a quick spec check. In India, the Ioniq 5 is offered only in the rear-wheel drive long range guise. That means you get a 217PS electric motor driving the rear wheels, taking motive power from a 72.6kWh battery pack. The Korean marque claims this setup promises an ARAI-claimed range of 631km. How does it perform? Let’s find out.
Hyundai claims the Ioniq 5 can do 0-100kmph in 7.6 seconds. What can it do in the real world? Thanks to the electric motor putting out its torque instantly, we managed to do the same in an almost equivalent 7.68 seconds. The power of its instant torque output, though, can be seen in roll-on acceleration, where the EV takes just 4.33 seconds to do 20-80kmph. So yes, the Ioniq 5 moves, but not electrifyingly fast.
Since we had the Ioniq 5 for a very limited time, we couldn’t test it out for efficiency. We did a test on how much kilometres it can cover before the battery dies out, but that’s a story for another day. For now though, we take an interesting twist to see how fast the Ioniq 5 can charge up.
The funky looking EV supports charging speeds up to 350kW and we managed to find a 120kW fast charger in Pune. We plugged in the EV with around 22 percent charge and let it top up till 95 percent. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is priced at Rs 45.95 lakh (ex-showroom). And it’s an affordable alternative to the likes of the Kia EV6, which is essentially Kia’s version of the Ioniq 5 that’s imported as a CBU into India. The Ioniq 5 is also a more premium alternative to the likes of the BYD Atto 3.
