250cc Royal Enfield CANCELLED?

Product launch delays have greatly hurt the manufacturer, causing it to change its future plans

After years of dominance in the middleweight segment, this year hasn’t quite gone to plan for Royal Enfield. Most notably because arguably its most important product of the year, the Meteor, has faced massive delays in its launch. Worse still, Honda has already managed to roll out its H'ness CB350 which acts as a direct competitor to the upcoming Meteor. This has had a knock-on effect on the brand’s other plans, including future J platform motorcycles and even the 250cc bike, codenamed Project V, that RE was reportedly working on.

It appears as though the setbacks have caused Enfield to axe its plans for the 250 and focus on bikes displacing 350cc and above instead. We always felt that coming down to 250cc might be a bit of a stretch for RE, which has in the recent past operated in the 350cc to 650cc segment. The brand is also currently facing supply chain bottlenecks because of which production capacity has been greatly affected.

The end result is that RE’s plans for the near future now revolve around the Meteor, the upcoming Classic 350 replacement codenamed J1A, and the expansion of the 650cc lineup to include a cruiser. A single-cylinder roadster-style motorcycle resembling the Triumph Street Twin, likely to be called the Hunter, is also in the works.
