It’ll probably use the MT-09’s three-cylinder engine, slotting it right between the twin-cylinder YZF-R7 and the inline-four YZF-R1

After trademarking the ‘YZF-R9’ name in international markets, Yamaha has now done the same in India. Even though the YZF-R9 hasn’t broken cover yet, the latest trademark hints that it's all set for a global unveil very soon, probably at the 2021 edition of the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan, Italy.

So what will the YZF-R9 be? Well, for starters, an older sibling to the Yamaha YZF-R7. You see, Yamaha received many accolades for the R7, but it left some people wanting for a wee more. This is where the YZF-R9 will come in, being more powerful and better-equipped than the R7.

Speaking of power, the YZF-R9 will borrow its engine from the MT lineup, in this case, the Yamaha MT-09’s 890cc, inline-three engine that puts out 119PS and 93Nm, thus slotting it right between the 73PS YZF-R7 and the flagship, 200PS YZF-R1

And with the motor, the YZF-R9 will probably nab the IMU-based electronics package, quickshifter, and adjustable suspension too -- all from the MT-09 -- albeit with a new chassis for sportier riding dynamics.

As far as design is concerned, judging from the new YZF-R7 and the R15 V4, one wouldn’t be wrong to expect the R9 to be an enchanting lad as well.

The YZF-R9’s Indian trademark gives us hope that Yamaha could finally step into the big bike market here once again. However, in a recent interview with us, Yamaha’s top management dismissed any imminent big bike launches, so even if the bikemaker is planning to bring the YZF-R9 here, it’s probably a long time away.
