It’s official. Skoda’s upcoming Honda City rival will be called ‘Slavia’, and it will replace the current-gen Rapid. The made-in-India sedan will be the second Skoda model, after the Kushaq, to roll out under its ‘India 2.0’ strategy. The official unveiling will be later this year, followed by its launch in early-2022.
Fun Fact: The name Slavia harks back to Skoda’s early days when the Czech carmaker’s founders, Václav Laurin and Václav Klement, marketed their bicycles under the same name.
The Slavia will be based on the same MQB-A0-IN platform as the Kushaq. The carmaker also said the sedan will be larger than the current-gen Rapid, so it should be more spacious. Also, unlike the Rapid, which is a three-box sedan, the Slavia will be a notchback with a liftback tailgate similar to the Octavia and Superb.
The upcoming Slavia should get the Kushaq’s features, including the 10.1-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, connected car tech, climate control, ventilated front seats, single-pane sunroof, ambient lighting, wireless phone charger, 6-speaker sound system with a subwoofer, and auto headlamps and wipers.
Safety features will include six airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, and electronic stability control.
The Slavia will get the Kushaq’s 1-litre TSI and 1.5-litre TSI turbo-petrol engines, paired with manual and automatic transmissions.
