Check Out This Leaning E-trike From Joy E-bike!

The yet-to-be-named concept was unveiled at the Pune Alternate Fuel Conclave (AFC)

Gujarat-based EV startup Joy e-bike has unveiled a new concept leaning electric trike at the Pune Alternate Fuel Conclave. With the yet-to-be-named concept, the company plans to gauge customer responses before putting it into production.

The specifications of the electric trike haven’t been revealed, but the company did mention that it will not require a license to ride, meaning it will be a low-speed EV with the top-speed restricted to 25kmph. The electric trike is powered by a hub motor, linked to a battery pack located below the seat.

The most striking aspect of the trike is its complex front suspension. It comes with a series of linkages connecting the two front wheels, and features a single horizontally-mounted shock absorber (it uses a monoshock at the rear). It even gets a disc brake on each front wheel, and the tilt mechanism can be locked or unlocked by a lever mounted on the apron. This should be useful while parking the e-trike. For better practicality, the floor board gets extrusions, maximising the area. Other notable features include a full-LED lighting system, digital instrument cluster, and a dedicated switch to change riding modes. It appears to have a two-level riding mode along with a reverse function.

This isn’t the first time an Indian EV maker has tinkered with the idea of a leaning trike. Back at the 2020 Auto Expo, Hero Electric unveiled the AE-3 e-trike aimed at the B2B segment. Check out all the details in our coverage here.

While leaning e-trikes may sound fascinating from a technological perspective, they serve little purpose when it comes to practicality. Mass producing e-trikes with complex steering and suspension systems are expensive, and the Indian EV segment isn’t mature enough to have an environment that’s sustainable for niche products like these. Moreover, if the production version of the Joy e-bike e-trike is a low-speed offering, then its asking price would be too high for what it will offer.
