  • Deliveries for Defender Hybrid expected to begin from April 2021.
  • It combines the 300PS 2.0-litre petrol engine and a 143PS electric motor.
  • Develops a combined output of 404PS and 640Nm.
  • It can be driven up to 43km on pure electric power.
  • To come in four variants: SE, HSE, and the new X-Dynamic HSE, X trims.

During the launch of the Land Rover Defender, Rohit Suri, President & Managing Director, Jaguar Land Rover India, said, there are more engine options in the pipeline for the iconic SUV in India. The manufacturer has now begun bookings for the plug-in hybrid variants of the Defender. Currently, the Defender is offered only with a 300PS 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine.

The Defender hybrid will only be offered in the longer five-door 110 variant. Nope, you can’t get this powertrain in the smaller 90 3-door body style. It will come in four variants: SE, HSE, and the new X-Dynamic HSE and X trims. The last two are new variant additions exclusive to the hybrid powertrain. You can read about these new variants here

The Defender hybrid continues to utilise the 300PS 2.0-litre petrol powertrain. This powertrain, however, slaps on a 143PS electric motor that draws power from a 19.2kWh battery pack. The combined power output is 404PS and 640Nm. Despite its gargantuan proportions, the Defender hybrid is mighty quick, doing 0-100kmph in just 5.6 seconds. Top speed is capped at 209kmph.

A hybrid powertrain, though, is not about blitzing performance. Rather it’s about the eco-friendly credentials. The Defender hybrid is capable of doing 43km on pure electric power. The carmaker will also install a 7.4 kW AC wall box charger at no extra cost at your convenient location. Juicing up the Defender from 0-80 percent takes around 2 hours using this charger.

Deliveries for the Land Rover Defender hybrid are expected to begin from April 2021, and we expect prices to be revealed closer to the said period. It won’t come cheap though, and the base hybrid variant could be priced around the Rs 1 crore mark (ex-showroom). Land Rover could soon offer it with a frugal diesel engine too for those looking to munch miles.
