Why WFH When You Can Work From Your Car, And A Tesla At That!

Sure, this could solve the question of privacy in video conferencing during lockdowns, but what about the risk from distractions?

  • The Model 3 could be introduced with this software since it has a cabin-facing camera with the requisite hardware.
  • It could also be used as a monitoring feature for self-driving fleets, discouraging vandalism.
  • Other possibilities include Caraoke recordings and a feature that recognises occupants and applies their personalised settings.

With the coronavirus pandemic forcing people to work from home, this is causing issues for those wanting to conduct video conferences at home. Some of the reasons include a lack of sound proof areas around the house or simply no space to conduct interruption-free video conferences. Well, Elon Musk and Tesla are now planning a solution where you can work in your car instead.

Musk has revealed via a tweet that Tesla will be introducing native video conferencing software in its cars soon since these already have the hardware for it. Tesla launched the Model 3 three years ago with a cabin facing camera in the rear-view mirror. However this camera is yet to be implemented with the feature.

Thus, there is an incoming software update being linked to Autopilot and the Tesla Network, which could be a fleet of self-driving taxis controlled by Tesla. In this update, the camera could be used to monitor driver attention when using Autopilot and keep track of passenger behaviour. This feature could also help monitor passengers in a shared fleet of self-driving cars in order to discourage vandals.

Elon Musk has also revealed other possibilities for the camera, like using it to let drivers and passengers record themselves while using the Caraoke feature. Another possible use could be introducing a feature where the camera recognizes occupants and automatically applies specific settings personalized to them.

There is no word yet on when video conferencing or any of the above mentioned features will be introduced. But the advantages for all this in the comfort of a Tesla seem very tasty. But this feature could pose a risk of distraction if people start video conferencing while driving. As things stand, any answers to this will only be revealed once this update shows up.
