Both these SUVs are in their own league off-road, but how do they fare in terms of real-world performance on tarmac?
We have already established the fact on plenty of previous occasions that both the Mahindra Thar and Maruti Suzuki Jimny are in their own league when it comes to off-roading. But let’s admit that both theseSUVs will spend most of their time on tarmac. So in this report, we have lined up the petrol-automatic models at our test location to find out which is quicker in our on-road performance test.

As you can see clearly, the Thar’s larger, turbocharged petrol engine is much more powerful than the Jimny’s naturally aspirated unit. And considering that we have the automatic variants on test, the Thar has also a much more sophisticated 6-speed torque converter, as opposed to the simpler 4-speed unit on the Jimny.

Yes. The Thar, with the additional power on tap, managed to beat the Jimny by a significant margin. As you can see, the Thar was a whopping 5.5 seconds quicker than the Maruti in the 0-100 kmph run. And in the roll-on acceleration, the 6-speed automatic and more torque managed to beat the Jimny by over three seconds.
