- Tata Motors revealed its first-ever premium hatchback, the Altroz, at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. It is the second car to be based on the company’s Impact Design 2.0 philosophy. It looks quite sharp, if you ask us.
- The Altroz’ face gets a lot of sharp elements like the lines on the bonnet, a black lip at the tip of the hood, angular fog lamp housings and a sleek lower lip on the bumper.
- The grille gets the same honeycomb pattern seen on other Tata cars but adds a few opaque panels towards the end, which does look quite neat.
- The window line gets a kink close to the A-pillar, which should offer better visibility. Both the roof and the shoulder line converge for a sporty look and the ORVMs gets an all-black finish, which compliments the window underline.
- From the rear three quarters, the Altroz is a bit polarising as the tailgate has a multi-layer design.
- The gloss-black section sticks out the back and looks a bit busy.
- The tail lamps, however, look quite interesting with a black surround.
- The roof-mounted spoiler adds more sporty character to the rear design.
- From the side, the Altroz look quite muscular with its flanked wheel arches and strong character lines.
- Even from this angle, the tail section looks busy and splits opinions.
- The car showcased at Geneva sits on 17-inch alloy wheels, which will most likely be downsized to 15-inch units in the production-spec car.
- The interior is dressed in all-black with contrast body-coloured elements around the AC vents, as seen on the latest cars from Tata.
- The centre console layout is quite neat with the touchscreen placed on top, audio controls in the middle and the switches for the automatic climate control at the bottom.
- It gets a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
- The steering wheel is a leather-wrapped, flat-bottom unit which has cruise control buttons on the right and audio controls on the left. The instrument cluster, like the Harrier, features a digital display for vehicle-related data and tachometer.
- Powering the Tata Altroz is a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine. The diesel engine details are still awaited.
- The petrol engine produces 102PS of maximum power at 5500rpm and 140Nm of peak torque in the 1750-4000rpm range.
- The engine will be paired to a 5-speed manual transmission.
- If you are eying an automatic, you might have to wait a bit as Tata is yet to reveal if the Altroz will get a two-pedal setup.
- However, if you do not want the petrol engine, Tata has one alternative.

- While the key elements of the design remain the same, it gets a tweaked bumper as an EV does not require an air dam.
- From the side, the EV looks identical to the petrol-variant aside from a few small changes.
- It gets 18-inch wheels. However, it’s unlikely that they will make their way into the production-spec car.
- At the rear, changes are limited and both the EV and the IC-powered car look the same.
- The lower lip of the bumper does not get reflectors and hence looks much cleaner.
- The Altroz EV features a futuristic dashboard that is usually found in concept cars.
- The centre console is dominated by two large screens - one for the infotainment system and the other for climate control functions. However, this setup is unlikely to make it to the production version.
- The EV does not need gears. Hence, you only get a drive mode selector.
- The Altroz is set to be launched in India by mid-2019. We expect it to be priced between Rs 5.5 lakh to Rs 8.5 lakh. The Altroz EV will come to India as well, but much later in 2020.
