Volkswagen Tiguan Production Begins, Launch Soon

The Tiguan, the SUV segment contender from VW, will take on the likes of the Hyundai Tucson and is expected to be launched in India soon
Good news for SUV lovers! Volkswagen India has commenced production of the Tiguan SUV in India. Being produced at VW's Aurangabad facility in Maharashtra, the Tiguan marks the company's re-entry in the SUV segment in India. VW had first shown the Tiguan at the 2016 Auto Expo and is expected to be launched in India in the next couple of months. With prices expected to start around Rs 25 lakh, the Tiguan will take on the likes of the Hyundai Tucson and Honda CR-V upon launch (which can be as soon as first quarter of 2017-18 financial year). But why should you await the Tiguan's launch? Here's why.

The Tiguan bound for India is the second generation model which is based on VW's MQB platform. All cars based on this platform such as the Skoda Octavia and Superb have great driving dynamics. Hence, the Tiguan should benefit from being based on the MQB platform.
The Tiguan will come with a 2.0-litre diesel engine (we had spotted testing it on Indian roads too), that's tuned to deliver 150PS and 340Nm. Unlike global markets, the India-spec version is unlikely to feature the higher 190PS/400Nm tune nor the 6-speed manual transmission. The SUV will get Volkswagen's '4Motion' all-wheel drive wizardry and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The Tiguan measures 4486mm in length, 1839mm in width and 1654mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 2677mm. The model on sale internationally comes with safety features such as seven airbags, ABS, EBD and hydraulic brake assist. It has exterior features such as LED headlamps with LED DRLs, four driving modes and alloy wheels ranging from 17 inches to 20 inches in size (the India-bound car, considering our road conditions, should get 17-inch wheels). On the inside, the Tiguan has features such as split folding (40:20:40) rear seats, 3-zone climatronic air-conditioning, 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and panoramic sunroof.
VW had earlier tried its luck in the SUV space with the Touareg, but that couldn't find too many takers. The Tiguan looks modern and has potent underpinnings, which should give it a fighting chance against its more established rivals. Excited for the new Tiguan?
