The second SUV from the German carmaker will set its sights on the Hyundai Tucson

Volkswagen Tiguan

Volkswagen is ready to start their second innings in the Indian SUV segment with the new Tiguan. In a matter of hours, the Hyundai Tucson will get a fresh new rival to compete with in the crossover space. VW's last SUV in India was the Touareg which failed to find any traction among buyers. Now with the Tiguan, Volkswagen is targeting a different segment of buyers and hopes to cash in on the SUV craze that the country has been witnessing for the last couple of years. With leaked images and details, we know pretty much everything there is to know about the SUV, so let's take a quick look.

Engine

Volkswagen Tiguan

The India-spec Volkswagen Tiguan will be available with just one engine option - a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel. This motor is also diesel-ban proof. So, in case the National Green Tribunal ruling on diesel-ban makes an appearance in any part of the country again, it is certain that it will not affect Tiguan. While the engine’s state of tune is still unknown, it is expected that the SUV will pack either 150PS/340Nm or 177PS/350Nm under the bonnet. Transmission duties will be taken care by a 7-speed DSG automatic which will power all four wheels via VW’s '4Motion' AWD system. Both variants are expected to get this configuration. Also, the Tiguan will get driving modes - On-Road, Snow and Ice, Off-Road and Off-Road Individual.

Looks

Volkswagen Tiguan

The Volkswagen Tiguan continues the same charm (if you could call it that) which all the other VWs have - subtlety and sophistication. The front of the SUV gets a long horizontal grille which extends into the headlamps. Speaking of the headlamps, they will be all-LED units with LED daytime running lights (DRLs) similar to what’s seen on the Vento and the Passat. The bumper gets aggressive creases which make the Tiguan look muscular, surely a plus point for a majority of our car buyers.

In profile, the Tiguan has a very clean design. The strong shoulder line and flanked wheel arches give it some attitude. The 18-inch wheels fill the arches well and provide a dominant stance. The rear features split-taillamps and a chrome line separating the bumper from the body.

We are eagerly waiting for the prices of the SUV, which will be out in a matter of hours. Stay tuned!
