The first piece of the MG Comet EV’s price puzzle is here so let’s see how it stands against its chief rivals
The MG Comet EV is the latest EV to land on our shores and with introductory prices starting from Rs 7.98 lakh (ex-showroom), it is astoundingly close to the price ballpark of the Tata Tiago EV and somewhat close to even the Citroen eC3 with a bit of a stretch, considering it is short on two full doors. So where does the mini-EV stand against the *pricing of the two electric hatchbacks? Let’s find out:
Comet X Tiago
MG Comet EV |
Tata Tiago EV |
Difference |
Introductory starting price - Rs 7.98 lakh |
XE Base - Rs 8.69 lakh XT - Rs 10.19 lakh XZ Plus - Rs 10.99 lakh XZ Plus (7.2kW) - Rs 11.49 lakh XZ Plus Tech - Rs 11.49 lakh XZ Plus Tech (7.2kW) - Rs 11.99 lakh |
Base - Rs 71,000 |
The difference between the base prices of the Tiago EV and Comet EV is just Rs 71,000, and both are specced very similarly in terms of battery size and the range on offer (nearly 230km for both). However, when compared with the Tiago EV’s top-spec trim, the price variance between the two rises multifold with a gap of 4.01 lakh. That money will get you Tiago’s bigger battery pack with a claimed range of up to 315km along with a faster 7.2kW AC charger.
This big disparity is down to the fact that MG has only revealed the price of the Comet EV’s single variant, which will be offered in a total of three variants. Prices of the remaining trims will be disclosed in May and they could close the gap between the two.
Comet X eC3
MG Comet EV |
Citroen eC3 |
Difference |
Introductory starting price - Rs 7.98 lakh |
Live- Rs 11.50 lakh
|
Base - Rs 3.52 lakh |
*All prices ex-showroom Delhi
The Citroen eC3 is a little on the steeper side to begin with, so understandably, there’s a huge price difference of Rs 3.52 lakh between the Comet and eC3’s base trims. That gap further widens by Rs 1.26 lakh, taking the total difference between the two to Rs 4.78 lakh (ex-showroom). Citroen eC3 gets a 320km (claimed) range from a single 29.2kWh battery pack, which is significantly higher than the Comet’s claimed range of 230km.
Bookings for the Comet EV will begin from May 15, and you can test drive the mini EV yourself from April 27. Prices for its remaining two variants will be disclosed in May and they could touch the Rs 10-lakh mark. The MG Comet EV is a smaller alternative to the Tata Tiago EV and Citroen eC3.
