The Tesla Model Y electric SUV has been one of the company’s best selling EVs alongside the Model 3 with the two entry-level models garnering a major chunk of Tesla’s 2020 sales. Now, Tesla has made the Model Y more affordable with the introduction of the Standard Range. In addition, the Model Y also gets the option of a 7-seater layout with its own trim-specific feature additions.

The biggest differentiator in the Standard Range is its powertrain. It is powered by a single rear-wheel-drive electric motor. It offers the lowest claimed range in the Model Y lineup, at 393km, in the US. It's 1.8 seconds slower than the Performance Range variant in the 0-96kmph sprint, at 5.3 seconds. It hits a top speed of 217kmph.

With the addition of the 7-seat option, you also get some trim-specific bits. They include flat-folding second and third row seats for maximum storage, sliding second row seats, third-row USB type-C charging port, and electronic fold-flat releases in the trunk. The Model Y comes equipped with features such as 12-way power-adjustable front and rear heated seats, 14-speaker audio system, and a 15-inch centre touchscreen.

Tesla retails the Model Y Standard Range at USD 41,990 (around Rs 30.76 lakh), with the 7-seater layout adding USD 3,000 (around Rs 2.19 lakh). Back home, Tesla plans to start its India innings with the launch of the Model 3 which is expected later this year. As for the Model Y, we could see it around 2022.
