Lewis Hamilton to come to India

If you were wondering what the Vodafone McLaren 'Speed up' campaign is all about, here's your answer. Lewis Hamilton will drive his McLaren MP4-27 on the evening of September 16, on the main access road to Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai. The road will replicate a Formula 1 race track complete with grandstand and pit garage on the occasion.

Some lucky Vodafone customers will have the privilege of riding with Lewis and a chance to visit the pit lane to see the technology that the F1 team uses. Motorsport enthusiasts will also have the opportunity for a full scale simulator experience and see a replica of the Vodafone McLaren-Mercedes car.

“I am simply overwhelmed by the incredible excitement shown by the people of this country. I had a wonderful experience in Bangalore last year and this year I am hoping that the excitement will be faster, smarter and better in Mumbai,” Hamilton said.

The initial venue, the Queens Necklace (Marine Drive), was scrapped owing to opposition by the Marine Drive Council (MDC) to an F1 car speeding at almost 200km/h on the road that has a 50km/h speed limit.

However the organisers are yet to confirm the event at BKC. “We have been approached for permission for the car racing event at BKC, but no permission has been granted yet. The application is under consideration,” said Vivek Phansalkar, Joint Police Commissioner (Traffic).

This is not the first time a Formula 1 driver will be driving on Indian streets and most definitely not the first time that relatively insignificant reasons have acted as rumble strips to such events. The first time a Formula 1 car was driven on Indian streets was in 2009, when David Coulthard drove the Red Bull F1 car on the Bandra-Worli sea link. He was however fined about Rs 15,00,000 for breaking the 100km/h speed limit.
