Similar updates have been carried out for the 3 door variant as well, which gets all the additions the 5-door model has got

The Force Gurkha 5 door has been unveiled in India ahead of its official launch this May. It now gets an extended wheelbase accommodating a third row and added doors for the second-row occupants for improved practicality. The bookings for the Gurkha 5-door have already commenced at dealerships across the country for Rs 25,000. If you had your eyes on one, here’s a closer look at it in our 10-image gallery:

Exterior

The front resembles the Gurkha 3 door, and gets the same set of round LED projector headlights with DRLs and bumpers housing the fog lamps. The grille with Gurkha badging and turn indicators on fender fairings also remain unchanged. We reckon that at this stage of an overhaul, the styling could have been different from the three-door models, to give the 5-door model a unique identity.

Moving to the side, the boxy silhouette is retained, though with added doors for the second-row passengers and an extended wheelbase to accommodate the third row. The alloy wheels also get a new dual-tone 10-spoke design.

The back, too, is identical to the 3-door variant, with a spare wheel attached to the bootlid and a ladder to access the roof rack.

Interior

The dashboard layout has not undergone any considerate changes in terms of styling, but the equipment list has been extensively added to make it feature-rich. An updated 9-inch infotainment screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay has been integrated.

The features list remains bare minimum, with remote locking, power windows, ABS with EBD and just 2 frontal airbags as standard. The AC controls remain manual and miss out on an automatic climate control unit. At this price point there could have been added safety features such as six airbags, considering that this update comes a while after the initial launch of the 3-door variant.

A 7-inch digital driver’s display has been incorporated, providing crucial information including a tyre pressure monitoring system. Earlier, in the three-door model, the TPMS was relayed through an aftermarket accessory.

The second row gets a bench seat with integrated armrest with cupholders in the middle, and aircon vents above the rear-seat occupants.

Notably, the third row gets captain seats with ingress and egress access from the boot.

Powertrain

It gets a 2.6-litre diesel engine producing an uprated 140 PS and 320 Nm mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and a four-wheel-drive system.

Instead of a stick selector for the 4-wheel-drive transfer case, now there’s a rotary dial selector to toggle between 2-wheel-drive and 4-wheel-drive functions that can be shifted on the fly. Also, you can notice a manual locking differential for both the front and rear axle. And lastly, you get a snorkel for wading through water.

Expect the pricing to be upwards of the Gurkha 3-door version, which retailed at Rs 15.09 lakh (ex-showroom). The Gurkha 5-door will be a larger alternative to the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and will directly compete with the upcoming Mahindra Thar 5-door.
